Hoosiers Fall in Big Ten Quarterfinals

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 42 Indiana University women's tennis team (15-9) was knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals Friday afternoon, dropping a 4-1 decision to the host-school Hawkeyes of Iowa (17-5).

"We gave it a good fight," said Head Coach Lin Loring. "Iowa played very solid and we were too banged up. We needed some quick matches and didn't get them. When those singles matches started going long, I knew we were in trouble."

Leslie Hureau and Myriam Sopel were one game away from clinching their match at No. 2 doubles, leading 7-6, before the contest was halted due to Iowa securing the doubles point with 8-5 wins at both first and third doubles.

"It has been a frustrating season because of all the injuries," said Coach Loring. "At the end of the fall I wrote down what I thought our line-up would be in the spring. We never played that line-up the whole semester."

Hureau continued her stellar play in singles action, winning in straight sets. The Hoosier freshman topped Lynne Poggensee-Wei 6-1, 7-5 at second singles, cutting the IU deficit to 2-1 on the team scoreboard.

Iowa was able to snag the next two singles matches, however, and come away with a 4-1 victory.

The Hoosiers must now await their NCAA Tournament fate with the selection show airing on ESPNews sometime between 5-6 p.m. on May 4.

"I still think our record will get us into the NCAA Tournament," said Coach Loring. "All of our losses are to teams in the top-40, and we have a top-10 win against Tennessee. I think we should be in."
