BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-A second-half goal from Will Bruin after a slow start by the Hoosiers allowed the Indiana men's soccer teal to come away with a 1-1 tie against the Cincinnati Bearcats in a spring match Friday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
The Hoosiers are now 1-0-1 in spring competition. They will return to the pitch on April 14 against IUPUI at 7 p.m. in Bloomington.
It was not a pretty start for the Hoosiers as they looked out of sync in the opening minutes, allowing the Bearcats to go on the attack. Cincinnati applied the pressure by taking advantage of Hoosiers miscues and went ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute on a goal from D.J. Albert. Mark Konitsch played the ball into the box from the short left side and it took a fortuitous bounce to Albert who hit it home past IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner. Despite an even 4-4 advantage in shot attempts, it was Cincinnati who had the better of play over the first 45 minutes.
"It was really a tale of two halves," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "The first half we were really out of sync. We really challenged the team at halftime. A lot of key things that we have spent a lot of time on we did not do well with. I am very happy with the way they responded in the second half. I thought the 30 minutes to start the second half was more like an IU team could play. The disappointment was we were not sharp or proactive in the first half, but I thought they responded well and had a good performance in the second half."
Indiana's best scoring opportunity in the first half came less than three minutes in when Bruin had a 1-on-1 shot against UC goalkeeper Matt Williams. Williams was able to get a hand on the ball for the save, one of three on the night. Freshman Jacob Bushue, who joined the team in January after graduating from high school a semester early, saw his first action in the Cream and Crimson when he came on as a sub in the first half, and promptly unleashed a shot that was just off target. Bruin had another shot, his second of four on the night, with 9:35 to go in the first period with another save from Williams.
Bruin's second goal of the spring season and the game-tying tally came at 57:26, with the assist from Joe Tolen. Tolen played a long ball over the top of Bruin and the sophomore ran down the ball, taking new UC goalkeeper Joey Barnard on and shooting it around him for the score. It was the second time in as many games that the pair connected on a score, with Bruin assisting on Tolen's game-winning goal against Louisville.
Midfielder Rich Balchan finished with a pair of shots, along with one each from Matt Wiet and Andy Adlard to give IU a 9-6 advantage in shot attempts. Cincinnati took eight corner kicks to the Hoosiers' two, and tallied 14 fouls to IU's eight.
