BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior rower Emily Kasavana has been honored with the Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award, the Lionel D. Edie Award and the Anita Aldrich Leadership Award winner.
Kasavana, who graduated on Saturday, May 8, with a degree from IU's Kelley School of Business, receives the Stahr Award, which is presented to five graduating seniors at Indiana University who have excelled academically while serving as active student leaders. She earns the Lionel D. Edie Award, which is given to the highest-ranking graduating senior majoring in Business Economics. Kasavana was also named IU's Anita Aldrich Leadership Award winner, given by the Indiana Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to a female varsity student-athlete who exemplifies the ideals of leadership, scholastic achievement and athletic ability.
"Emily is the type of individual any coach would be thrilled to have in their program," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "She is a highly motivated leader who always does the work necessary to succeed both in the classroom and in the athletic arena. It was obvious from the first day that Emily became a member of this team that she was going to have a huge lasting impact on our program. For four years she has been a positive influence on everyone affiliated with our program, and she will be missed. I am extremely confident that she will be as successful in her post collegiate career as she was during her time hear at Indiana."
Kasavana, IU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president, is a three-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree. She earned ESPN The Magazine Third Team Academic All-America honors in 2009 and was the Hoosiers' Scholastic Achievement Award winner in 2009 and 2010. She was also named the 2009 Jack Tichenor Award winner for having the highest grade point average of any female IU student-athlete. Kasavana was named the 2010 Hoosier Award honoree, which is given by IU Athletics to a student-athlete that has brought honor and distinction to IU.
"Emily has been a truly outstanding student, leader and athlete while at Indiana," said M. Grace Calhoun, IU's Associate Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services. "Her ability to very capably and gracefully balance all three has been recognized through her receipt of the Elvis J. Stahr Distinguished Senior Award, the Lionel D. Edie Award and the Anita Aldrich Leadership Award. Emily has made lasting contributions to IU's student-athletes and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics as a whole through her leadership of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and we are sincerely grateful for her dedication and service."
Kasavana, the 2008 IU Rowing MVP, was the 2007 and 2008 Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award winner, which is given by IU Athletics to a female student-athlete from each sport who has distinguished herself in athletics and academics, and has displayed an outstanding mental attitude.
The Indiana rowing team will continue the championship season when it travels to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to race in the Aramark NCAA South/Central Region Sprints on Melton Lake, May 15-16.
