BOLOGNA, Italy - The IU Volleyball team picked up a sweep today in Bologna, Italy; topping IDEA Bologna, a professional team, by scores of 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 and 28-26. The teams played an "international friendly," allowing for a fourth set no matter what happens in the first three.
Indiana out-killed IDEA Bologna by 14, served up seven more aces and blocked two more attacks in the match. Jordan Haverly tallied a team-high 18 kills while Ashley Benson swung at a .452 hitting efficiency en route to her 15 put-aways. Benson was IU's top points producer, also notching six blocks (two solo) and a service ace.
Libero Caitlin Cox was an assassin from the service line, picking apart IDEA Bologna for five aces. She also had a key presence in the serve-receive game with improved passing. Remaining in the defensive backcourt, Kelci Marschall led the team with 13 digs.
Following the contest, the Hoosiers were invited to attend the club's end-of-season banquet. The banquet was not just for the team Indiana played, but for all of the IDEA Bologna club's teams of various age groups. As honored guests, IU enjoyed an evening filled with traditional Italian foods (a five-course meal), wine and camaraderie.
Next up is Rome, where the Hoosiers will be for three days before heading back to the States on Monday, May 31.
