ROME, Italy - Indiana snagged two of five sets against the Italian Junior National Team on Saturday (May 29), while also enjoying day two of sightseeing in Rome. The teams agreed to play five sets no matter what, resulting in a 23-25, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25, 18-16 defeat for the Hoosiers.
Ashley Benson and Caitlin Cox led IU offensively and defensively, respectively. Both had arguably their best performances of the trip thus far as Benson racked up 22 kills at a .486 clip (22-4-37) while Cox dug a team-leading 21 balls.
Additional offensive contributors included Jordan Haverly with 11 kills, Samantha Thrower with six put-aways at a .364 pace and Taylor Wittmer connected on three kills in her nine errorless swings (.333).
In the defensive backcourt, Kelci Marschall and Haverly also notched double-digit digs, posting 13 and 11 dig apiece.
A visitation of the Colosseum preceded the match, beginning early in the day. Following the Colosseum, the Hoosiers walked around "Ancient Rome," taking in all the scenery of the coveted location.
After the match, the IU Volleyball team gathered for another traditional Italian five-course meal located near the hotel.
Tomorrow (May 30), Indiana spends their last full day in Europe and faces the Italian Junior National Team once again. The original match time has been moved back to 4:30 p.m. A trek to the Vatican City highlights the pre-match slate for the travel party.
A photo gallery of days 10 and 11 won't be available until Sunday evening due to extremely slow internet connection here in Rome.
