BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Former Indiana University women's water polo goalkeeper Jessica Goldner and current IU assistant coach Kandace Waldthaler helped lead the Calgary Splash 20+ team to a second place finish at the USA Water Polo Masters National Championships in San Diego, Calif. on June 11-13.
The duo started every contest for the Splash on their way to the runner-up finish, which was an improvement from their sixth place showing in 2009. The squad began the weekend with three consecutive victories to take first place in Group D. They followed up with an 11-9 win against Costa Masters in the semifinal, before coming up short against Old Mission Beach Blue in the championship game, 6-5.
Goldner anchored the cage at Indiana from 2002-2005. She is currently the school's all-time leader in saves (891) and shots faced (2033). She racked up 15 or more saves in six games during her Hoosier career. The Los Altos, Calif. native was also named second team All-Division in each of her final three seasons.
Waldthaler competed for the Hoosiers from 2004-2005 and will be entering her fifth season as assistant coach at Indiana. She was named to the AWPCA All-American third team during her senior season, as well as first team CWPA All-Western Division following each of her two seasons at IU.
