BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana University women's water polo assistant coach Kandace Waldthaler and senior attacker Katie Black completed the 18th annual 2010 Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim on Sunday, June 6 in San Francisco, Calif.
The race, originally scheduled to stretch 1.5 miles from Alcatraz to San Francisco, was altered by race officials and the coast guard due to thick fog over Alcatraz Island. The alternate course was over a mile in length and took place around Aquatic Park with the water temperature in the San Francisco Bay hovering around 61 degrees.
Waldthaler and Black each competed in the non-wetsuit division. Black finished second overall in the division and first in the 20-24 age group with a time of 23:57. Waldthaler completed the race in 26:04 to place seventh overall and first in the 25-29 age group.
Black competed in each of the Hoosiers' 32 games during the 2010 season, finishing the year with nine goals, 13 assists, and 20 steals.
Waldthaler, a former third-team AWPCA All-American, is coming off her fourth season as an assistant coach at Indiana.
