The No. 17 Hoosiers open the season against No. 9 Boston College on Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. ET at Garber Field in Amherst before facing UMass on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m.
RECONNECTING WITH THE PAST
This weekend's opening trip will put IU against Boston College for the first time and UMass for just the second time in program history, however, the Hoosiers have quite a past with each program. IU head coach Amy Robertson was a Northeast Region All-American in lacrosse and field hockey at UMass before graduating in 1988 and serving as an assistant coach between 1992-96.
IU assistant coach Jill Dedman was a two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year at Boston College and a 1999 All-American before graduating in 2000. She will be inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Oct. 23.
LAST TIME
Saturday's meeting with Boston College marks the first of the series with Indiana, however, the Hoosiers and UMass faced each other in 2001. The Minutewomen came away with a 4-1 win over IU.
HOOSIER NOTABLES
• Redshirt sophomore Morgan Fleetwood returns after earning Second Team All-Big Ten, Big Ten All-Tournament and womensfieldhockey.com All-Rookie Team honors in 2009. In her rookie season, she set a single-season IU record in shots with 89 and tallying the second most goals (15) and points (36) in single-season history.
• Junior Corey Brautigam was a First Team All-Big Ten, Big Ten All-Tournament Team and NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com Third Team All-American honoree as a sophomore. She recorded four goals and two assists in 2009 for 10 points in 21 games for the Hoosiers.
• Senior goalkeeper Alex Mann, who recorded 80 saves and a 1.89 goals against average as a junior, leads the IU defense. She collected 14 wins and one shutout in 21 games.
• The Hoosiers also return redshirt junior back Brenna Moeljadi, who tallied two defensive saves in 2009. She also helped out the IU offense with four goals, including a game-winner in a 4-2 victory at Michigan.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLL
Indiana opens the season ranked No. 17 in the 2010 Kookaburra/NFHCA Preseason Poll, announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Tuesday, Aug. 24. IU is one of five Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason poll (No. 7 - Michigan State, No. 14 - Ohio State, No. 18 - Penn State, No. 19 - Iowa).
IU SPLITS PRESEASON SCRIMMAGES
The Hoosiers split a pair of preseason scrimmages, beating Miami (Ohio), 6-4, in Bloomington, and falling on the road to Ohio State, 4-3.
Against the RedHawks, Morgan Fleetwood led the Hoosiers with two goals on four shots, three of which were on goal. Brenna Moeljadi also tallied one goal on four shots, while Lena Grote scored one goal on two shots. Corey Brautigam netted a goal for the Hoosiers, along with Kelsey Kiper. Kiper also tallied an assist on Fleetwood's second goal, while Jaclyn Zamudio assisted on her first goal of the game. Katie Griswold assisted on Moeljadi's goal. Against the Buckeyes, IU picked up a goal from Fleetwood as she scored on a penalty stroke. Brautigam netted IU's second goal of the day as she scored on a corner, with Shareyna Chang picking up the assist. Moeljadi scored the Hoosiers' third goal of the game as Zamudio earned the assist.
SUCCESS OF 2009
The Hoosiers ended the 2009 season ranked No. 13 after going 14-7 with a trip to the Big Ten Tournament championship game and the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
