FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Buoyed by second-half goals from Will Bruin and Nikita Kotlov, the Indiana men's soccer team came away with a 2-1 win over Duke in an exhibition match at the ShinDigZ National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind.
A pair of Fort Wayne natives earned the start tonight with junior Nate Mitchell and goal and senior Cameron Jordan in the midfield. Senior Andy Adlard wore the captain's armband for the first time this season. In all 18 different Hoosiers saw the field tonight as head coach Todd Yeagley and his staff continue to tinker with the lineup heading into next weekend's season opener.
Indiana had a chance to take a 1-0 lead at 4:17 when freshman Harrison Petts rocketed a shot off the crossbar. The play began with Will Bruin taking the ball up the left side before electing to dish back to Petts. Petts had Duke goalkeeper James Belshaw beat but saw his attempt hit just a few inches too high.
Six minutes later it was Bruin challenging Belshaw, taking a shot that forced him to tip the ball up and over the crossbar to set up a corner kick. With 19:27 to play in the first half, Adlard took one of his patented free kicks from just outside the penalty area but again Belshaw was able to come up with the stop. Another shot from Adlard was blocked, and defender Tommy Meyer took a free kick which bounced off a defender and dribbled to Belshaw for the save. Indiana had a commanding 5-1 lead in shot attempts in the first half and had three corner kicks to the Blue Devils' two.
After a string of close calls in the first half, Bruin finally broke through for the first goal of the match at 52:43. Service on the goal came from senior Daniel Kelly who played the ball in from nearly the same spot where he scored his goal on Sunday against Xavier. Bruin came in from the left of the goal unmarked and sent in a low line drive for the score.
Just over two-minutes later Kotlov racked up his first collegiate goal and what would be the game-winning score at 54:50. This time it was Bruin with the service as he sent a low cross across the box to Kotlov, who buried the ball into the lower left.
With 22 minutes remaining and a 2-0 lead, the Hoosiers were still in the hunt for a third score, as Meyer sent in a free kick that had Belshaw back tracking but went just high. Sophomore Tim Wylie, another Fort Wayne native, came on with just under 20 minutes to go and made an immediate impact with a shot on goal.
Duke's lone score of the match came in the 79th minute when Ryan Finley scored off a cross from Andrew Wenger.
Indiana finished the game with an 11-5 shot advantage, led by Bruin's three attempts. Mitchell was forced to make just one save for the Hoosiers, with Belshaw racking up five saves and two goals allowed in 90 minutes.
The Hoosiers continue play at the ShinDigZ National Soccer Festival on Sunday as they face Denver at noon. After this weekend the Hoosiers will turn their focus to the start of the 2010 regular season, which kicks off on Friday, Sept. 3 against California in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers and Golden Bears will square off at 7:30 p.m. ET, preceded by Notre Dame vs. UCLA at 5 p.m. ET.
On Sunday Indiana will take on UCLA at 2 p.m. ET in a match that will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. The Hoosiers are looking to "Fill the Bill" for that game, hoping to break the attendance mark of 7,423 set against the Bruins in 2007.
