AMHERST, Mass. - Behind second-half goals from sophomore Brooke Borneman and redshirt junior Brenna Moeljadi, the No. 17 Indiana field hockey team defeated UMass, 2-1, in its final game of the UMass Invitational in Amherst on Sunday, Aug. 29.
Offensively, the Hoosiers (1-1) dominated the Minutewomen (0-2) from the beginning of the game, outshooting UMass, 7-2, in the first half and tallying four penalty corners. However, that offense didn't break though until the second half when IU came out firing with three straight shots from redshirt sophomore Morgan Fleetwood, and seniors Kelsey Kiper and Lena Grote in the first two minutes of the second half. Indiana's fourth shot, by sophomore Brooke Borneman, was the one that broke through as she scored on a rebound from a save on Grote's shot to put the Hoosiers up, 1-0, with 36:57 on the clock. At the 41:56 mark, an Indiana penalty corner set up Moeljadi for IU's second goal of the game to take a 2-0 lead on UMass. Kiper and junior Kristy McFadden recorded the assists on Moeljadi's goal.
With a 2-0 IU lead, the Minutewomen started to challenge the Hoosiers' defense, stepping up their attack after Indiana's second goal. At the 57:06 mark, a UMass corner set up Katie Kelly for the Minutewomen's lone goal of the game, to cut the Hoosiers' lead in half, 2-1. However, IU's defense held strong in the final minutes for the 2-1 win.
Moeljadi led the Hoosiers with one goal on four shots, two of which were on goal. Fleetwood tallied three shots, two on goal, and Borneman came off the bench to score one goal on one shot. Kiper recorded two shots and one assist, while junior Corey Brautigam, Fleetwood and Grote each registered one shot. Fleetwood also tallied an assist on the game. Junior Becky Pany recorded one save and gave up one goal in 70 minutes in the net.
Indiana outshot UMass, 14-10, on the game. The Minutewomen recorded nine penalty corners to IU's eight.
The Hoosiers return to action on Thursday, Sept. 9, when they host California on the IU Hockey Field in Bloomington at 3:30 p.m. ET.
