SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana opens the 2010 season with the annual adidas/IU Credit Union Classic Friday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 5.
• The tournament begins with Notre Dame vs. UCLA on Friday at 5 p.m., followed by the Hoosiers vs. California at 7:30 p.m.
• Indiana is 21-10-6 in season openers.
• Sunday the Hoosiers will face UCLA at 2 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
• Indiana went 0-1-1 at the Classic in 2009 with a 0-0 tie with No. 5 St. John's and a 1-0 loss to No. 3 Wake Forest.
• St. John's won the tournament and 1-0-1 based on goal differential, with Wake Forest also finishing 1-0-1, and Notre Dame 0-1-1.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana went 1-1-1 in preseason matches, falling 2-1 to Xavier on Aug. 22 in Bloomington, defeating Duke 2-1 on Aug. 27 in Fort Wayne, and playing Denver to a 0-0 tie on Aug. 29 in Fort Wayne.
• Daniel Kelly scored for Indiana in the loss to Xavier, while Will Bruin and Nikita Kotlov had goals in the win over Duke. Bruin also picked up the assist on Kotlov's goal, while Kelly assisted on Bruin's score.
• Newcomers Ambry Moss, Chris Estridge, Harrison Petts, Nikita Kotlov, Blake Wise and Kerel Bradford all saw action in the preseason.
• A pair of Soccer America preseason All-Americans will take part in the Classic in Notre Dame's Aaron Maund and Dillon Powers.
ADIDAS/IU CREDIT UNION CLASSIC HISTORY
• The adidas/IU Credit Union Classic is the nation's premier regular season college soccer tournament. This year's field features No. 20 Indiana, No. 5 UCLA, Notre Dame and California.
• Indiana is looking for its 12th adidas/IU Credit Union Classic title since the tournament began in 1983.
• On nine occasions, the NCAA Champion has played in the Classic:

• Teams in the Classic have reached the NCAA Tournament on 88 occasions.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
• California is coming off a season where it finished 9-8-1 and missed the NCAA Tournament.
• The Golden Bears were picked third in the 2010 PAC-10 preseason poll, behind UCLA and Stanford.
• Cal returns eight starters from last year's team, including senior midfielder Hector Jimenez who is the top returning scorer with 11 points (1g, 9a) a year ago.
• Senior defender A.J. Soares is the top returning goal scorer with three goals in 2009.
• Junior goalkeeper David Bingham started 16 matches in 2009, allowing 14 goals for a 0.95 GAA.
• Twenty-five of the 26 players on Cal's roster are from the state of California.
• Head coach Kevin Grimes is in his 11th season at Cal and enters with a record of 114-69-21 with the Golden Bears. He is assisted by Pieter Lehrer and Henry Foulk.
SERIES HISTORY
• This is the sixth meeting between the schools with Indiana holding a 4-1 advantage, including a 2-0 mark at home.
• The teams last met in 2003, a 3-0 win for IU in the adidas Classic.
• IU's only loss came on Nov. 5, 2000, 2-1.
• The Hoosiers have outscored the Golden Bears 11-4 in the series.
SCOUTING THE BRUINS
• UCLA is coming off a season where it went 12-4-4 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Wake Forest, 2-0.
• Four starters return from last year's squad with sophomore forward Chandler Hoffman the leading returning scorer with five goals and two assists (12 points) in 2009.
• The Bruins are picked to win the PAC-10 and have the No. 1-ranked recruiting class according to College Soccer News.
• There will be a familiar face for Indiana fans on the UCLA bench as sophomore Matt Wiet spent the 2009 season at Indiana.
• Head coach Jorge Salcedo is in his seventh year at UCLA and enters with a record of 71-33-22. He is assisted by Eddie Soto, Kenny Arena and Patrick Seymour.
SERIES HISTORY
• This is the 17th meeting between the two schools in what has become a long-standing rivalry.
• Indiana leads by a 9-7 margin, including victories in the last three matchups.
• The Hoosiers were 1-0 winners in the 2007 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, and took a 3-0 victory in Los Angeles in 2008.
• The team have also met in the 1999 College Cup semifinal (won by Indiana in quadruple overtime) and the 1997 College Cup semifinal (won by UCLA in triple overtime).
INDIANA vs. PAC-10
• Indiana is 24-9-3 all-time against teams currently in the PAC-10.
• The Hoosiers are 9-7 vs. UCLA, 4-1-2 vs. Stanford, 4-1 vs. California, 1-0-1 vs. Oregon State, 2-0 vs San Diego State and 4-0 vs. Washington.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Sixteen of the 30 players on the roster hail from the state of Indiana, including two from right here in Bloomington.
• Head coach Todd Yeagley and assistant coaches Brian Maisonneuve, Ernie Yarborough and Chris Munroe all played collegiately at Indiana.
• Yeagley, Maisonneuve and Yarborough were in fact all teammates from 1992-94.
• Eight of Indiana's 10 losses in 2009 came at the hands of teams ranked in the final NSCAA poll (No. 2 Akron, No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 16 Louisville, No.19 Ohio State [twice] ).
• Andy Adlard's two goals against No. 13 Kentucky in 2009 marked his first career multiple-goal game.
• Seven of Adlard's 12 career goals have been game winners.
• 12 of Indiana's 23 matches in 2009 were one-goal affairs. IU was 6-6 in those games.
• Twenty-four of Indiana's 28 goals in 2009 came after the halftime break
• Junior Tommy Meyer and his father, Keith Meyer, are the first father-son combination to play soccer at Indiana. Meyer played for the Hoosiers in 1980 and 1982-84, winning NCAA titles in 1982 and 1983.
• Indiana played its 100th Big Ten regular season match on Sept. 25, 2009 a 1-0 win at Wisconsin. The Hoosiers have won 83 percent (83-13-9) of their Big Ten regular season matches.
HOOSIERS PICKED SECOND IN BIG TEN PRESEASON POLL
• In a vote of conference head coaches, the Indiana men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the Big Ten in a preseason poll announced Aug. 25.
• Indiana is coming off a 12-10-1 season in 2009, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
• The Hoosiers return seven starters from last year's team, including All-Big Ten honoree Will Bruin, second-team All-Big Ten picks Andy Adlard and Rich Balchan, and junior defender Tommy Meyer.
• Defending champion Ohio State was picked to win by the coaches, followed by Indiana, Northwestern and Penn State tied for third, Michigan State, Michigan and Wisconsin.
2010 RECRUITING CLASS RANKED IN TOP 25 BY COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS
• The Indiana University men's soccer 2009 recruiting class was ranked No. 4 in the annual College Soccer News class rankings released in August. Now in its 10 year of ranking the top 40 recruiting classes, the Hoosiers have been among the top 25 every season.
• Indiana has a large class of newcomers in 2010 with 10 freshmen and a pair of transfers.
• Freshman midfielder Harrison Petts was the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year and a Parade All-American, while freshman goalkeeper Taylor Reeves was the Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year.
• Freshman midfielder Nikita Kotlov was a Parade All-American, first-team All-State and second-team All-American as a senior.
• Freshman midfielder Blake Wise led his team to the state championship game and broke a school record with 32 goals and 29 assists.
THE HOOSIERS ON TV
• The Indiana University men's soccer team is scheduled to have four of its regular season matches broadcast on the Big Ten Network in 2010.
• The television schedule begins on Sept. 5 when the UCLA Bruins come to town. The Indiana-UCLA matchup in 2007 marked the first-ever college soccer broadcast on the Network.
• Indiana is the only Big Ten team to have a nonconference came shown on the Network.
• The Hoosiers play host to Wisconsin on Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. in another Big Ten Network telecast. It will be a homecoming for Wisconsin head coach John Trask and assistant coach Phil Presser as both played and coached at IU.
• Michigan and Indiana meet on Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. in Bloomington for a primetime telecast. Indiana is 13-1-1 against the Wolverines.
• It is a Halloween telecast for Indiana and Northwestern on Oct. 31 at 5 p.m.
• All four of IU's broadcasts will be shown live. In addition, the Network will picked up a wildcard telecast the final weekend of the season.
• The Big Ten Network will also show the semifinal and final matches of the Big Ten Tournament in State College, Pa.
• In addition, Indiana's matches vs. California (Sept. 3), Evansville (Sept. 29), and Bulter (Oct. 27) will be available OnDemand to Comcast subscribers in the state of Indiana.
• The broadcasts will be available OnDemand 24 hours after the match.
TWO NAMED TO COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS FRESHMEN TO WATCH LIST
• Nikita Kotlov and Harrison Petts were named to the College Soccer News "100 Freshmen to Watch" List in August.
• Kotlov, out of North Central High School in Indianapolis, was named a Parade All-American in 2010, along with earning All-State and All-America honors his senior season. In his four-year career he tallied 45 goals and 39 assists, including 20 goals and 14 assists his senior season.
• Petts was an Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year and Indiana High School Player of the Year out of Zionsville High School. Petts concluded his high school career with 90 goals and 62 assists.
SEVEN HOOSIERS EARN ALL-BIG TEN HONORS in 2009
• Led by All-Big Ten first team selection Will Bruin, the Indiana men's soccer team placed a total of seven players on the 2009 All-Big Ten teams.
• Penn State, Ohio State and the Hoosiers led the way with five selections each among the first and second teams.
• In addition to Bruin's first team selection, junior midfielder Andy Adlard, senior midfielder Eric Alexander, junior defender Rich Balchan, and senior defender Ofori Sarkodie were second-team honorees.
• Freshmen Kevin Bick and Matt Wiet were unanimous selections to the Big Ten All-Freshman squad.
• Bruin, who was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2008, started all 22 matches played and led the teal in goals (9), points (22), shots (93) and was second in assists with four. Five of his nine goals were game winners, including his goal in the Hoosiers' 1-0 win over Butler in the NCAA Tournament. He also had game-winning goals against Seattle, Florida International and the regular season and Big Ten Tournament matchups against Wisconsin.
• Adlard was a second-team honoree for the second time in as many seasons. The junior midfielder finished second on the team in goals scored with five and tied with Bruin for second in assists with four. He was also second on the team in points (14) and shots (52). Adlard had winning shots against No. 13 Kentucky and at Michigan.
• Alexander earned All-Big Ten honors for the fourth time in his career after being named to the All-Freshman team in 2006, the first team in 2007, and the second team in 2008. One of three team captains, Alexander started all 23 matches in the midfield where he scored one goal and assisted on four others, including Bruin's game-winning score vs. Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament.
• Balchan picked up his second career All-Big Ten honor after being named to the All-Freshman team in 2007. In 2009 he started 22 matches with time spent both in the midfielder and on the defensive line. He was named the defensive MVP of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament as the Hoosiers won the tournament title with victories over New Mexico and Seattle. He also assisted on Adlard's game-winning goal against Kentucky.
• Sarkodie was an All-Big Ten pick for the third time in his career after being named to the All-Freshman team in 2006 and the first team in 2007. Sarkodie started all 22 matches played and captained a defensive line that posted 10 shutouts on the year. A preseason All-America pick by Soccer America, Sarkodie was named to the All-Tournament team at the University of Akron Tournament in September.
• Sarkodie was also Indiana's winner of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
• In his first season in the Cream and Crimson, Bick appeared in 16 matches, making six starts. He tallied 11 shots on the season and picked up his first career point with an assist on Adlard's goal in a 2-0 win over Seattle at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
• Wiet appeared in 20 matches with 19 starts, playing both midfield and defensive roles for the Hoosiers.
2009 NCAA RPI RANKINGS
• The NCAA released its final RPI rankings of the regular season for men's soccer on Nov. 10 and the Hoosiers finished in the No. 6 spot.
• Indiana was No. 17 in the first rankings on Oct. 13, and No. 7 in the second release on Oct. 27.
• Out of the seven Big Ten teams, five ranked in the top 25 with Indiana joined by No. 3 Northwestern, No. 11 Ohio State, No. 13 Penn State, and No. 17 Michigan State. Michigan is No. 33, with Wisconsin No. 38.
• The Rating Percentage Index is a mathematical measurement of a team's strength.
• The NCAA tournament selection committee uses it to help determine which teams will receive at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament. The formula consists of a team's winning percentage against Division I opponents (25 percent), the opponents' strength of schedule (50 percent) and the opponents' opponents' strength of schedule (25 percent).
BIG TEN DOMINATION
• Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 83-12-9 in regular season matches, tallying nearly 30 more victories than second-place team Penn State (55).
• Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 16-0-3 in those matches.
• IU has won 11 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 13 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007.
• Indiana has been the league's goals-against average leader in 15 of 18 seasons, including 2007 when the Hoosiers allowed just two goals in six matches for a 0.31 GAA.
• IU had a league-record 10 Big Ten Players of the Year, including two of the last four seasons.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year three of the last four years, with Will Bruin taking the award in 2008.
THE HOOSIER COACHING TREE
• With the successful roots of Indiana soccer, it is no surprise that the program has spawned several successful coaches throughout the country at the Division I level.
• Former IU players and assistant coaches John Trask and Caleb Porter lead Wisconsin and Akron, respectively.
• Porter currently has his Zips ranked No. 1 in the country in preseason polls and led the Zips to the College Cup in 2009.
• Trask is assisted by Phil Presser at Wisconsin, a former Hoosier player and coach.
• UIC head coach Sean Phillips (assistant coach/player) also has Indiana ties. His assistant coach Aleksey Korol also played and coached at Indiana.
• UAB head coach Mike Getman was a player and assistant coach at Indiana.
• IUPUI head coach Steve Franklin was an assistant at Indiana under Jerry Yeagley, and his assistant coach Matt Reiswerg is a former IU goalkeeper.
• Former Hoosier manager Matt Burke is in his first year as director of operations at Maryland.
