BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team scored three goals in the first half and netted a fourth goal in the second half to power past Missouri State with a 4-1 win on Sunday, Sept. 19 at the IU Hockey Field in Bloomington.
Redshirt sophomore Morgan Fleetwood scored her third goal of the season to get the Hoosiers (4-2) going as she played a loose ball from the middle of the field into the goal to give IU a 1-0 lead at the 9:21 mark. Sophomore Shareyna Chang scored her third goal of the year on a redirection of a ball from redshirt junior Brenna Moeljadi at the 15:48 mark to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 lead. Missouri State put a little pressure on IU late in the first half with back-to-back shots that resulted in a save by junior goalkeeper Becky Pany and a defensive save from freshman defender Danielle McNally. Just before the half, junior Corey Brautigam netted her first goal of the season on another redirected ball, this time from sophomore Brooke Bornman, at the 32:04 mark, to send the two teams into the break with IU leading, 3-0.
In the second half, the Hoosiers kept at it scoring at the 39:26 mark as Moeljadi used a ball off a penalty corner to give Indiana a 4-0 lead on Missouri State. However, the Bears (2-5) were able to get on the board at the 47:55 mark as Hillary Lawless took a pass from Sarah Cusick and scored on a shot that was straight on the goal.
Moeljadi led IU with three shots, all on goal, with one goal and one assist. Fleetwood tallied two shots, both on goal, with one goal, while Brautigam and Chang each recorded one shot on goal, both of which resulted in a goal. Pany played all 70 minutes in the net and registered five saves.
Indiana outshot Missouri State, 14-9, including an 11-3 advantage in the first half. The Hoosiers also earned nine penalty corners to the Bears' five.
IU returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24, when it opens the Big Ten season at Penn State at 6 p.m. ET.
