BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2009 campaign marked the Indiana football program's 50th season in Memorial Stadium. IUHoosiers.com will count down the top 12 games in Memorial Stadium history this season.
A panel consisting of former Hoosier player and Director of Operations Harold Mauro, former player and current Athletic Director for Football Operations Mark Deal, former IU radio analyst Max Skirvin, current Voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer, current IU pre-game, post-game and halftime voice Joe Smith, Herald-Times reporter Lynn Houser, long-time Hoosier Sports Information Director and current IU Assistant Athletic Director Kit Klingelhoffer and long-time Herald-Times sports editor Bob Hammel deliberated and came up with a list of the top all-time games.
Fans then emailed their votes from this list, resulting in the top 12 games in Memorial Stadium history. Here is No. 10:
INDIANA 38, PURDUE 31
NOVEMBER 20, 1971
The running of Indiana's Ken St Pierre (142 yards) and Ken Starling (89) offset the passing of Purdue's Gary Danielson, who completed 14-of-25 for 264 yards and two touchdowns.
Indiana linebacker Rob Spicer returned an intercepted pass 22 yards for the game's first score and was named "UPI Midwest Lineman-of-the-Week".
However, the game is remembered best as "The Bucket Brawl" because of what transpired following the most intense Bucket game in Memorial Stadium history. Players, fans and the bands from both teams skirmished on the field after the Hoosiers captured the Old Oaken Bucket.
