BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the 12th selection in the third round and 48th pick overall, Major League Soccer's Columbus Crew selected Indiana University midfielder Andy Adlard in the MLS Supplemental Draft held today.
"I am thankful and thrilled that, thanks to the Columbus Crew, I get a chance to achieve a dream I have had since I was a little kid," Adlard said. "I couldn't be happier."
Adlard completed his four-year career at Indiana this past fall, starting all 20 matches and earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. Adlard had seven goals in 2010, three of which were game-winning scores. His scores were the different in a 2-1 win at UMass, a 2-0 win over Drake and in a 5-1 victory over UCLA. Adlard also had a team-best seven assists on the season. Adlard was named to the All-Great Lakes Region third team in 2010 and finished second on the team in points with 21.
A second-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2008 and 2009, Adlard finished his career with 19 goals and 17 assists for 55 points. He appeared in 86 matches, making 69 starts. A dangerous player on restarts, Adlard was a perfect 5-for-5 on penalty kicks in his career, including going 3-for-3 his senior season.
Adlard will meet up with a familiar face in Columbus as he joins four-year teammate Rich Balchan, who was the No. 12 overall pick of the Columbus Crew in last week's Major League Soccer SuperDraft. Adlard will also join former Hoosier Danny O'Rourke in the Crew lineup, as Indiana has a long history with Columbus. Current IU head coach Todd Yeagley and assistant coach Brian Maisonneuve both played professionally with the Crew.
