ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (0-1) opened the 2011 season with a 10-5 loss at the hands of No. 6 Loyola Marymount at the Michigan Kick-Off. The Hoosiers scored four goals in the final period, but a third quarter four-goal run by the Lions proved too much to overcome.
"I thought we had a lot of opportunities that we didn't capitalize on," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We can take a lot away from this game, but there's no doubt that we need to do a better job of finishing when we're in position."
Senior Kate Dunn, sophomore Kym King, junior Jakie Köhli, and freshmen Meghan Lappan and Amanda Redfern each scored a goal apiece for the Hoosiers. Junior Cassie Wyckoff grabbed seven saves in the cage, to go along with a pair of steals.
Both teams battled on the defensive end during the early going, before LMU notched the first score of the contest with 3:30 to play in the first quarter. A minute later, the Lions converted a power play for a goal to take a 2-0 lead.
The Cream and Crimson got on the board with 1:37 remaining in the opening period when Hanna Eimstad connected on a long range dish to King, who finished it off with a quick strike to make it 2-1 heading into the second.
LMU started the second quarter scoring with a power play goal to go up by two scores. The Hoosiers tried to get the momentum back, but a pair of Köhli shot attempts found the side bar, followed by a pair of unsuccessful Indiana power play opportunities. The Lions then capped the half with a post-up goal with 12 seconds on the clock to take a 4-1 lead.
The third quarter featured a four-goal run that occurred during a span of 3:24 and stretched the LMU lead to 8-1.
The Hoosiers found a groove offensively late in the contest, outscoring the Lions 4-2 in the final period. Two Indiana newcomers connected at the 6:07 mark, as freshman Shae Fournier found Redfern for the score. Fellow freshman Meghan Lappan got on the board a minute later, spinning past a defender and scoring her first collegiate goal to make it 9-3.
Following LMU's final goal at the 3:10 mark, Köhli and Dunn each scored for the Hoosiers to make it a 10-5 final.
