BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Powered by five innings of no-hit baseball for starting pitcher Chad Martin, Team Cream took a 1-0 advantage in the IU Baseball Cream vs. Crimson Series on Monday. A four-run fifth inning propelled Martin's squad to a 4-0 victory in the series opener.
The contest remained scoreless entering the home half of the fifth until a string of four consecutive hits for Team Cream finally lit the scoreboard. Justin Cureton got the party started with a double to place himself in scoring position. Dustin DeMuth then drove in the first run of the day, poking an RBI-double. Back-to-back singles by Kyle Schwarber and Dillon Dooney followed, each pushing another run across the dish and putting Team Cream ahead 3-0. Dooney would circle around to home later in the inning, thanks to a Brian Ritz fly ball and RBI-single for Collin McEnery.
Team Cream's bullpen of Matt Dearden and Ryan Halstead took care of the rest, each working the mound for one inning of the seven-inning contest. Closer Ryan Halstead came on for the seventh, closing out the win.
Game two of the Cream vs. Crimson Series is slated for 3 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Sembower Field. Admission is free.
