FRENCH LICK, Ind. - Paced by a top-10 finish from freshman Elizabeth Tong, the Indiana women's golf team finished sixth at the 12-team Lady Northern Intercollegiate, held at the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort.
The Hoosiers posted a final round of 316 to tally a 54-hole score of 916 (300-300-316). UCF came from behind to win the tournament, posting the best round of the event on Tuesday with a 289 to finish at 887 (308-290-289). Ohio State took second (892), with Michigan third (893), Iowa State fourth (896) and Augusta State fifth (902). Michigan's Megan Bauer was the individual medalist, posting a 3-under 68 on Tuesday to finish at 213.
Tong remained steady for the Hoosiers throughout the event, carding a 77 on Tuesday to finish with a 224 (71-76-77). She had birdies on the par-5 fifth hole and the par-5 15th hole. It is her first top-10 finish at a major event this season.
Senior Kristtini Cain finished tied for 18th with an 80 on Tuesday and an overall score of 227 (73-74-80). Junior Rosie Davies matched Tong for the low round of the day with a 77, placing 32nd (78-76-77/231).
Despite a round start to the final round, junior Pamela Burneski managed to finish among the top 60, placing tied for 54th with a score of 241 (78-77-86). Her 86 on Tuesday was due in large part to carding an 11 on the par-4 ninth hole.
Junior Kate Coons tied for 56th, one stroke behind Burneski at 242 (86-74-82). Coons had seven holes of par in the third round but was tripped up with a double bogey on hole three.
Freshman Kamryn Klawitter competed as an individual, finishing 65th with a total score of 247. Klawitter's best round of the tournament came Tuesday when she carded a 5-over 76.
Indiana will host its second tournament in as many weeks with the IU Fall Invitational, Oct. 17-18 at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
