BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second time this season, Indiana University freshman forward Eriq Zavaleta is the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Zavaleta earns the award after a week that saw him put three balls in the back of the net. Against Butler on Oct. 12 it was Zavaleta's goal in the 85th minute that gave Indiana the 1-0 victory.
In a Big Ten matchup at Michigan on Oct. 15, Zavaleta netted scores in the 56th and 86th minutes as part of a 4-1 Indiana victory. His first goal erased a 1-0 Hoosiers deficit, while his second score gave him the first multiple-goal match of his career.
Zavaleta is currently tied for the team lead in goals scored with seven. He and Alec Purdie are tied for second in the Big Ten in goals scored, and are tied for the conference lead in points (16) and points per game (1.23).
Zavaleta's seven goals scored are the most by a Hoosier freshman since Darren Yeagley recorded seven in 2006.
The Hoosiers (8-3-2) are back in action this Wednesday when they play host to Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET.
