BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana women's water polo made a splash in 2011, capturing the program's second CWPA Eastern Championship, advancing to the NCAA Championship, and tying the single-season school record of 26 wins. The Hoosiers will attempt to carry that success into 2012 as head coach Barry King announced the schedule for the upcoming season.
The Hoosiers will be tested in the early stages as they open the campaign at the Michigan Kick-Off on January 21-22 in Ann Arbor.
"This is a really good schedule for the relative youth of this squad," said head coach Barry King. "We will be introduced to some high level competition right away with weekends at Michigan and Santa Barbara. We will be shown the consistent level of competition that we are going to need to be able to play with throughout the semester. I'm looking forward to building success within the season."
IU will venture to the west coast on January 28-29 for the Gaucho Invitational in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Hoosiers will follow that up the next weekend with a return trip to the golden state as they will compete in the Triton Invitational in La Jolla.
Indiana will get its first taste of CWPA action on February 25-26 with league games in Albany, N.Y.
The Hoosiers begin the month of March with the CSU Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. on March 3-4.
IU will then head back to California for the week of spring break, beginning with the Roadrunner Invitational on March 10-11 in Bakersfield. The Hoosiers will visit Redlands on March 13 for a road matchup, as well as a contest against Marist. IU will round out the trip at San Diego State on March 17-18 for the Aztec Invitational.
The cream and crimson will face a crucial stretch at the end of March, beginning with league games on March 24-25 in Erie, Pa., followed by the always intense rivalry clash with Michigan in Ann Arbor on March 31 to cap the regular season.
The Hoosiers will have their first home competition of the 2012 campaign as they host the Divisional Championship at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center on April 14.
IU will then gear up to defend its CWPA Eastern Championship crown on April 27-29 in Providence, RI., with the event being hosted by Brown University.
The winner at the Eastern Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship in San Diego, Calif.
