BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Over 40 members of the media attended the event at Cook Hall on Thursday, taking part in drills with current coaches and former players before playing in a tournament to decide a team champion in Assembly Hall.
The participants started the afternoon with some stretching exercises in Cook Hall with strength and conditioning coach Je'Ney Jackson followed by some station work. Current coaches and former players in attendance coached the members of the media on different skills like reading the pick-and-roll and setting screens.
Next, each team was given time to work with their teams and diagram plays in preparation for the team tournament. Former players that were coaching teams included:
Team 1: Todd Leary and Calbert Cheaney
Team 2: Brian Evans and Chris Reynolds
Team 3: Jim Crews
Team 4: Tom Abernathy and Royce Waltman
In the finals of the tournament, it was Team Crews coming out on top against Team Abernathy-Waltman by a score of 36-30. Tony Adragna (IUSportComm) was named MVP of the championship game as voted by his teammates and received a pair of candy-striped warmup pants.
"This was really fun to be around a great group of guys today," Crews said after the win. "And it is interesting to see how competitive people get as soon as you turn the scoreboard on and start keeping score. It really brings it out in everyone, they all wanted to win."
