AUSTIN, Texas - The Indiana women's golf team is in 10th place after 36 holes of the 2011 Challenge at Onion Creek at the Onion Creek Club in Austin, Texas.
Texas Tech leads the 13-team field at 579, followed by Texas-San Antonio (582), Michigan (588), Texas State (588) and Augusta State (590). Indiana posted round of 305 and 300 for a score of 605, and is just eight shots out of sixth place.
The teams wrap-up play with 18 holes on Tuesday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. ET.
"We had some really good holes, but when we made mistakes, they were big ones," said head coach Clint Wallman. "That is something we have to be better at. The field is tightly bunched and we need to find a way to eliminate those big numbers. Everyone played well at some point today, we just weren't able to do it all at the same time."
Freshman Elizabeth Tong tallied rounds of 73 and 79 and is tied for 34th (152). Tong opened play with a 3-over 73, starting the round at -1 under through the first four holes with a birdie on six. After a pair of bogeys she was back at even par with her second birdie of the day coming on the par-4 13th hole. She would go on to par six of the nine remaining holes in the round. In round two was five over after five holes with a triple bogey on six and a double on nine, but went -1 on holes 10 through 18.
After an 80 in round one, junior Rosie Davies shot up the leaderboard in round two with a 2-over 72 to move into a tie for 34th (152). It was a rough round one from the start for Davies, opening with an 11 on the par-5 seventh hole. After a bogey on nine she came back to birdie 10 and would hit par on three of the next five holes. She added a double bogey on 14 and bogeys on 17 and 18, before going even for the final six holes. Davies carried that play into round two with a lone double bogey on nine standing in her way of an even-par round. A bogey on 18 was offset by a birdie on 14.
Junior Pamela Burneski shaved five strokes off her round one score over the second 18 holes and is tied for 39th at 153 (79-74). Burneski pared the first six holes in round one but struggled with bogeys on four of the next six holes. After making the turn on 18 she would bogey holes one, three and four, and a double bogey on five put her 9-over for the round. It was a fairly clean round in round two for Burneski with 13 holes of par and a birdie on the par-4 10th hole.
Junior Kristtini Cain posted rounds 73 and 83 to finish day one tied for 51st (156). After a rough start in round one with bogeys on three of the first six holes, Cain settled down to go -3 over the next five holes, with birdies on 10, 13 and 14. A double bogey on 15 moved her from even par to +2, and a bogey on one left her at three over for the round. In round two Cain was five over after three holes thanks to back-to-back bogeys, but carded her first eagle of the year on the par-5 seventh hole. She also had a birdie on one in round two.
After an opening round of 81, junior Kate Coons battled back with a 75 in round two and is tied for 51st (156). After starting with a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole in round 1, Coons was done in with double bogeys on seven and nine, and a quadruple bogey on 15. After a bogey on 16 put her at 10 over, Coons would go -1 over the next five holes before ending with bogeys on four and five.
Rounds of 79 and 77 have sophomore Sophie Hayashi tied for 51st (156). Hayashi pared two of the first three holes in round one but was hit with a double bogey on one and bogeys on holes two and four. She would finish with pars of seven of the final 12 holes. Hayashi had a pair of birdies in round two, shooting a four on the par-5 seventh hole and a three on the par-4 16th hole.
