THE OPENING TIP
Indiana is in its 112th season of college basketball and will host Kentucky. The Hoosiers have started the season 8-0 for the first time since 2002-03 after defeating Stetson, 84-50, on Sunday, Dec. 4. A victory on Saturday would give the Hoosiers their best start since the team started 10-0 in 1989-90.
Indiana received 23 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll (31st) and four votes from the Associated Press (39th) this past week. Kentucky will be the first No. 1 team to visit Assembly Hall since UConn came to Bloomington on Feb. 4, 2006.
The Hoosiers return 93.3 percent of their scoring with 2,078 of 2,226 points returning.
THE COACHES
Indiana named Tom Crean as its 28th men's basketball coach on April 2, 2008, and is in his fourth year with the Hoosiers. He is 226-162 all-time as a head coach and picked up wins over No. 18 Illinois and No. 20 Minnesota last season, his first against ranked opponents at Indiana. He came to Indiana from Marquette where he was 190-96 (66.4) in nine seasons and made five NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2003 Final Four.
John Calipari is in his third season as the head coach at Kentucky and has a 72-12 record with the Wildcats. In his 20th season as a college head coach, Calipari has posted a career record of 475-150 with stops at UMass and Memphis.
QUICK HITS
With a 34-point victory over Stetson, Indiana has won eight straight games by 10-points or more for the first time since the 1988-89 season. IU also won its first five games of the season by a margin of 20 points or more for the first time in program history.
With a 2-0 road record, IU, Stanford and Clemson are the only BCS schools with two true road victories of 10 points or more. The Hoosiers are the only team in the Big Ten to have four different players score 20 or more points in a game this season
Indiana has shot 52.3 percent from the field, 44.0 percent from 3-point range and 74.0 percent from the free throw line. The Hoosiers are sixth in the nation in field goal shooting, and ninth in scoring (85.0), turnover margin (5.9) and steals (10.1). The Hoosiers also are averaging 23.8 points per game off of turnovers.
Freshman forward Cody Zeller has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times He leads the Hoosiers averaging 15.5 points and 7.6 rebounds. He is second in the Big Ten and fifth in the nation in field goal percentage, making 67.7 percent of his field goal attempts. Among national freshman, he is sixth in scoring, first in field goal percentage, seventh in rebounds, and third in steals.
Sophomore Will Sheehey is averaging 11.8 points, which is the highest among Big Ten non-starters. He was named Tournament MVP after he scored a career-high 21 points against Butler in the championship game of the Hoosier Invitational.
Junior Jordan Hulls is averaging 11.3 points and has made 15-of-28 long distance shots and is shooting 42.1 percent from 3-point range during his career. Dating back to last year, he has made 52 straight free throws. He had 20 points and five assists at NC State.
Freshman guard Remy Abell, a product of Eastern High School in Louisville, is just the sixth Kentuckian to play basketball for IU and the first since Tom Boone was on the roster in 1969-70. He is averaging 2.3 points per game.
