BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University senior defender Chris Estridge (Indianapolis, Ind./Brownsburg) has been named a first-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Estridge was one of 11 players named to the first team and the only player from the Big Ten Conference to earn All-America honors. It is the second-straight season a Hoosier has been named to the NSCAA All-America first team, with Will Bruin earning the honor in 2010. Overall 37 Indiana players have earned a total of 60 All-America accolades.
"I am extremely honored to be named first-team All-American," Estridge said. "It is an accomplishment to be a part of this group of great players. I could not be happier."
"We are very excited to hear that Chris was named a first team All American," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "Chris had a fantastic year on both sides of the ball. His ability to unbalance opponents off the dribble and through his well-timed runs played a large role in our team's success this past year. Chris joins a distinguished group of IU soccer greats who have been able to achieve this wonderful honor."
Joining Estridge on the first team were GK Brian Holt (Creighton), D Matt Hedges (North Carolina), Charles Rodriguez (Charlotte), MF Miguel Ibarra (UC Irvine), Enzo Martinez (North Carolina), Luis Silva (UCSB), F Ashton Bennett (Coastal Carolina), Ethan Finlay (Creighton), Billy Schuler (North Carolina) and Andrew Wenger (Duke). The Hoosiers faced off against Holt, Hedges, Martinez, Finlay, Schuler and Wenger in 2011.
Estridge spent two seasons with the Hoosiers, starting 40 of 42 matches played, including all 22 games in 2011. He was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten first team this season, helping the Hoosiers to nine shutouts and 13 victories, as well as a trip to the third round of the NCAA Tournament. Always an offensive threat from his left back position, Estridge contributed three goals this season and tallied five assists. He finished the year with a career-best 29 shot attempts, nine of which were on frame.
With his collegiate career over, Estridge looks to continue playing at the professional level. He was recently one of three Hoosiers invited to the 2012 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine, Jan. 6-10 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
