Complete NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region Teams
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University senior Chris Estridge, freshman Eriq Zavaleta and sophomore Nikita Kotlov were honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America today as all-region honorees.
Estridge and Zavaleta were named to the Great Lakes Region first team, while Kotlov was a second-team honoree.
Estridge started all 22 games this season and was a unanimous first-team All-Big Ten pick. His first Big Ten honor, Estridge has helped anchor a defense that posted nine shutouts this season, while allowing just 19 goals. Always an offensive threat from his left back position, Estridge finished the 2011 season with three goals and five assists for 11 points, which ranked fourth on the team. Estridge will take part in the 2012 adidas Major League Soccer Player Combine, Jan. 6-10 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Zavaleta, also a 22-match starter, was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was a unanimous selection to Big Ten first team and All-Freshman team. He led the Hoosiers and the Big Ten with 10 goals and 25 points, becoming the first freshman to lead IU in scoring since Todd Yeagley in 1991. Zavaleta tallied three game-winning goals on the season and had his first career multiple goal match against Michigan.
After battling injuries early in the season, Kotlov ended the year strong, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors. He finished second on the squad and tied for second in the Big Ten with nine goals, tallying eight of those nine goals in the final 10 matches of the season. Kotlov scored two goals, including the game winner, in a 3-0 win over Old Dominion in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and also had the game-winning goal vs. Ohio State.
