Women's Golf Opens 2011 at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team will escape from the ice and snow of Bloomington as it opens its 2011 schedule with the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 13-15 at The River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Joining Indiana on the 6,300-yard, par-72 Greg Norman-designed course will be Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Iowa State, Kent State, Michigan, Northwestern, N.C. State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Penn State, host Purdue, SMU, Texas Tech and TCU. Alabama is the defending team champion and is currently ranked No. 1 in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Team Rankings. Purdue (No. 5) and Georgia (No. 9) are also ranked among the top 10. Indiana is No. 64 heading into the spring season.
The teams will play three 18-hole rounds over the three-day tournament with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. on Sunday and Monday and a 7:30 a.m. start on Tuesday.
Freshman Lindsay Gahm is coming off a strong fall season and qualified in the No. 1 spot for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Sophomore Kate Coons will be making her second-consecutive trip to Puerto Rico, while junior transfer Kristtini Cain earned the No. 3 spot. Senior Cecilia Orevik and sophomore Rosie Davies round out the traveling party.
Gahm competed in three fall tournaments and posted top-five finishes in two of the last three events. She placed tied for third at the Lady Northern Invitational, which is a preview of the 2011 Big Ten Championship course, and tied for fourth at the final event of the fall, the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas. Coons also had a solid fall for IU, placing 12th at the Wolverine Invitational and 15th at the Lady Northern Invitational.
Cain wrapped up her fall with a pair of top-20 finishes, placing tied for 15th at the Lady Northern and tie for 16th at the Challenge at Onion Creek. This will be Orevik's first tournament of the year, while Davies is making her first trip since the Lady Northern Invitational where she placed tied for 67th.
It is a busy start to the spring schedule for the Hoosiers as they will turn around and head to the Central District Invitational, Feb. 21-22 in Parrish Fla.
