IU's Second Half Surge Falls Short at Michigan

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana used a 19-3 run late in the second half to cut the Michigan lead to two, but it was not enough as the Wolverines win in Ann Arbor on Wednesday night, 88-76. Senior Jori Davis led the way for Indiana with 27 points. Whitney Lindsay and Alisha Goodwin each finished with 10 points.
Aulani Sinclair started the game with a field goal to put Indiana on the board, Davis followed scoring seven-consecutive points to give IU a 9-8 lead with 15:50 remaining in the first half. Michigan then used an 8-0 run over a 2:33 span to jump ahead, 16-9. Hope Elam silenced that run with 3-point field goal to cut the lead to four.
The Wolverines then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it a 22-12 game. Elam again ended that U-M threat with a strong put back layup to cut the lead back to single-digits at the 10:07 mark.
Michigan later extended its lead to 27-16, but Davis and Goodwin nailed field goals on consecutive Indiana possessions to make the score 27-20 with 6:52 remaining the opening stanza. From that point, the Wolverines outscored IU 18-10 to end the half, that run included a 3-point field goal at the horn by Veronica Hicks to make the score 45-30 Michigan advantage at the break.
In the first half alone, the Wolverines hit nine 3-point field goals and outscored the Hoosiers from the free throw line, 10-1.
To start the second half, Milika Taufa provided a spark off the bench for IU scoring the first five points of the half for the Hoosiers. That spark was short lived however as Michigan pushed it's lead to 62-44 after a jumper by Jenny Ryan with 12:04 remaining.
Indiana then made a major push to get back into the game beginning with two free throws from Alisha Goodwin. After a pair free throws by the Wolverines, Whitney Lindsay hit a 3-point field goal followed by an Andrea Newbauer make from the charity stripe. Rachel Sheffer hit 1-of-2 from the line for Michigan before Jori Davis nailed a long-range bomb to cut the lead to 12 with 9:35 to play and the score, 65-53.
Sinclair found open space to cut the deficit to nine with a 3-point field goal at the 8:31 mark. Davis then scored five-straight Indiana points before Andrea McGuirt capped the 19-3 Hoosier run with a put back layup to make it a 65-63 contest with 7:10 remaining in the ballgame.
Kate Thompson silenced IU's run with a timely 3-pointer for Michigan as the two-point deficit was as close as the Hoosiers would come down the stretch. The Wolverines closed the game outscoring Indiana 23-13 to earn the victory.
"The surge to get back into the game was great, but we dug ourselves into a hole," Indiana head coach Felisha Legette-Jack said. "We knew what they were going to do, they are a very good 3-point shooting team and our defense was just not there. Jori Davis was just fantastic. She gave us her all on defense and offense tonight, she is a special player for this program, we just need others to follow her lead."
The Hoosiers will have a week off before returning to the road to play Wisconsin on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
