BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's soccer team starts 2011 with a six-match spring schedule as it works its way toward the fall season. Three of the six matches will take place in Bloomington, with another in Fort Wayne.
"Our goal this spring is to develop individually and collectively through challenging and competitive training sessions along with having our players play in tough matches," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "We are very excited about our matches this spring as we look to challenge and push our returning group. Competing against top teams in our region along with playing the Columbus Crew will provide us an appropriate gauge to measure our strengths and weaknesses. Also, developing positional depth within the returning group and giving our young players an opportunity is important as us we prepare for next fall."
On Wednesday, March 9, the Hoosiers will hold a Red vs. White intrasquad scrimmage at the Twin Lakes Recreational Facility in Bloomington. The event begins at 7 p.m. and will also feature an autograph session afterwards.
The Hoosiers will face an alumni squad on Saturday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers then head south to take on 2010 NCAA College Cup runner-up Louisville on Saturday, April 2 in Kentucky. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Indiana's first home match of the spring is part of the 2011 Midwest Soccer Coaches Symposium when it takes on in-state foe Evansville on Friday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. That match will be played on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
IUPUI comes to Bloomington on Tuesday, April 12 for a 5:30 p.m. meeting. The teams will play on the IU Soccer Practice Field, adjacent to Armstrong Stadium.
The spring season comes to an end on Wednesday, April 20 when IU travels to Fort Wayne to meet with Notre Dame. The 7:30 p.m. contest will be played again this year at Parkview Field, the home of the Ft. Wayne TinCaps minor league baseball team.
"I am very pleased with our progress since returning in January," Yeagley said. "The team is working extremely hard and we are much further along than we were last year at this time. Our approach is simple: `Everyday Excellence' will give us the foundation for success. Our foundation is getting strong."
