SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Indiana Hoosiers (4-8) women's water polo team finished the Rodeo Tournament on Sunday with a convincing 9-3 victory against host Santa Clara. The No. 16 Hoosiers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, controlling from start to finish and claiming their first back-to-back wins of the 2011 season.
"We really came out and executed our gameplan," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "After a sluggish start to the weekend against Pacific, we really started to play the way we're capable during these last two contests."
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Shae Fournier and Lauren Wyckoff, each recording hat tricks. Jakie Köhli notched a pair of goals, while Nicole Redder added one.
Cassie Wyckoff registered seven saves and one steal against the Broncos, as the Indiana defense limited Santa Clara to just 15 shot attempts.
Fournier got the Hoosiers off to a 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of goals during the middle of the opening period. The first goal was a skip shot after an assist by Amanda Redfern, followed by a long-range goal after the set-up from Kym King.
Indiana kept on the attack in the first quarter as Wyckoff converted a backhand in the post after the assist by Köhli to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.
The Broncos got on the board with a power play goal with 3:06 left in the first half, but Indiana responded with goals by Köhli and Wyckoff to make it a 5-1 halftime lead for the Cream and Crimson.
Köhli's goal was made possible by a hustle play from Kym King, as the sophomore from Carlsbad, Calif. rebounded a missed shot during a Hoosier power play and quickly kicked it out to Köhli who fired it into the net.
Wyckoff added her third goal of the contest less than a minute into the second half, scoring from inside two-meters after another connection from Köhli.
Redder extended the lead to 7-1 after converting a power play goal on the assist from Hanna Eimstad.
Santa Clara put together back to back goals to start the final quarter to cut the deficit to four, but the Hoosiers would respond.
Redder earned a kick-out with just over two minutes left in the contest and the senior immediately kicked it to an open Köhli, who converted her second of the game.
Fournier then finished it off with a goal as time expired, giving the freshman her first career three-goal effort.
