LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The Indiana women's golf team is taking advantage of perfect 85-degree scoring conditions in Arizona where it is in third place after one round of the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam, hosted by Northern Arizona in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The Hoosiers tallied a score of 296 (+8) to sit alone in third place. The host Lumberjacks lead with a 1-under 287, followed by Tarelton State in second at 293 (+5). The Hoosiers are followed by Eastern Michigan (298) and Grand Canyon (298) to round out the top five.
"We did a pretty good job overall, but we definitely let some scoring opportunities slip by," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We had some trouble with distance and didn't get the ball as close to the hole as we could have to set up the ability to score. We are looking forward to shoring it up tomorrow.
"This course is very scorable and I anticipate improving with every round. They are getting more comfortable as time goes on."
Playing in her first tournament of the spring, senior Lauren Giesecke leads the Hoosiers after shooting a season-low 72 on Monday. That puts her in a tie for eighth place.
Sophomore Kate Coons and freshman Lindsay Gahm are both tied for 13th with scores of 74 today. Junior Kristtini Cain is two strokes back and tied for 25th with a 76. Rounding out the scoring five for IU is sophomore Jacqueline Yanch who is tied for 43rd with a 78. Sophomore Rosie Davies is playing as an individual and shot an 88 on Monday.
The 54-hole tournament continues Tuesday with a single round beginning at 10 a.m. MT.
