LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - Led by top-20 finishes from senior Lauren Giesecke and freshman Lindsay Gahm, the Indiana women's golf team posted its best team finish of the year, finishing tied for second at the Lumberjack Shootout at Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
The Hoosiers tallied a 300 in Wednesday's final round to finish with a 54-hole total of 885 (296-289-300). The host Lumberjacks won the tournament with a score of 871, while Florida International posted a 292 on Wednesday to finish tied for second with the Hoosiers. Eastern Michigan placed fourth (888) and Tarelton State rounded out the top five (890).
"I have mixed emotions," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We gave ourselves a chance and played well for the most part. We just didn't capitalize on the opportunities we gave ourselves down the stretch. But I think it is a good thing because it gives us idea of what we need to do and major areas we need to work on coming down the stretch."
Giesecke, playing in her first tournament of the spring, had a career-best outing to lead the Hoosiers by finishing tied for seventh. Giesecke posted a 75 on Wednesday to finish with a 2-over 218.
"Lauren had the tournament of her life and I am so happy for her," Wallman said. "I have always known she could throw good numbers up and it is great to see her achieve it.
Gahm bounced back after a rough second round to post the lowest IU score of the day today, carding an even-par 72. That moved her up into a tie for 19th with a tournament tally of 224 (74-78-72).
"Lindsay finished strong," Wallman said. She did not play best early on but went out and put in solid effort today. I expect her to have great tournament in Tucson next week.
Junior Kristtini Cain was just one stroke back, coming in with a 76 to finish tied for 26th at 225 (76-73-76). Also placing tied for 26th was sophomore Kate Coons after her round of 77 on Wednesday (74-74-77).
Sophomore Jacqueline Yanch finished with a 79 today, assuring that all five scoring Hoosiers would finish among the top 35. Yanch's tournament score of 228 (76-71-79) was good for a tie for 34th.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Rosie Davies tied for 55th with a score of 236. Her best round of the tournament came in the last round as she posted a 73 today (88-75-73).
"Rosie showed a lot of heart," Wallman said. "It is a big personal challenge when you start with shaky round, and she took a good hard look at herself and she what needed to do and battled back. She is a good player and last two days showed that."
