RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Nicole Redder scored a season-high four goals, including three in the second half to lead the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers (11-9) women's water polo team to an 11-6 victory at Cal Baptist on Thursday.
"We came out a little sluggish early on," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "In the second half, we were able to get some things going and make plays. I thought our defense caused some problems as the game went on."
Along with Redder's four-goal effort, Jakie Köhli posted a trio of goals in the win. Shae Fournier and Lauren Wyckoff each added two goals for the Hoosiers.
Cassie Wyckoff registered five saves, two assists, and a steal in a full 32 minutes of action.
Both teams exchanged a pair of goals in the opening period, with Redder scoring the first marker after a Köhli assist on a counter-attack. Köhli connected on a long-range shot later in the quarter, following CBU's first goal at the 4:11 mark. The Lancers evened things up with a power play score with 47 seconds left in the period.
CBU grabbed the lead with another six-on-five conversion near the midway point of the second stanza to make it 3-2.
Köhli responded for Indiana, completing a first half hat trick by scoring two goals in the final three minutes of the second period to give the Hoosiers a 4-3 lead at the break.
Lauren Wyckoff kicked off the second half scoring after driving the right side on a counter-attack and arching a lob past the CBU goalkeeper to increase the lead to two.
The Lancers came up with another power play goal two minutes later to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.
Indiana answered with a three-goal surge during the middle of the third, beginning with Fournier nailing a skip shot after a Meghan Lappan assist on a Hoosier power play.
The Hoosiers used rapid ball movement along the perimeter on another power play with 3:11 left in the period, as Redder scored after an assist by Wyckoff to make it a 7-4 Indiana lead.
The third goal of the Hoosier rally came as a result of a precise Wyckoff outlet from the goalkeeper position to Köhli who earned a five-meter penalty, which Fournier converted.
CBU came up with goals late in the third and during the first minute of the fourth period to get within two.
Redder responded with two goals in a span of 57 seconds, including an impressive look-away strike from deep, to give the Hoosiers a four-goal lead with five minutes to play.
Wyckoff notched her second goal of the contest on a lob with 3:10 remaining for the final score of the contest.
The Hoosiers will be back in the pool to take on Siena at 3:45 p.m. PT on Thursday afternoon.
