
Hoosiers Win Trio of Contests, Extend Streak to Eight

REDLANDS, Calif. - The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers (15-9) women's water polo team won three games on Friday to extend its winning streak to eight and cap an 8-1 Spring Break trip that included wins over three ranked squads. On Friday, the Hoosiers defeated Concordia, 13-6, No. 20 Iona, 14-6, and Redlands, 13-10.
"It was a terrific trip for us," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We really came out and competed at a very high level in all nine games. Our defense continues to thrive and we've been executing on the offensive end as well."
Game One Recap (No. 13 Indiana vs. Concordia)
The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team triumphed over Concordia, 13-6, on Friday, led by a season-high four goals from Lauren Wyckoff.
"We're playing at a high level right now," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did a solid job of executing our game-plan on both ends."
Along with Wyckoff's four scores, Shae Fournier added three, each coming in the first half. Katie Black, Kelsey Campbell, Megan Jacobs, Jakie Köhli, Meghan Lappan, and Nicole Redder each added one for the Hoosiers.
Cassie Wyckoff recorded seven saves and two steals, while allowing four goals in 24 minutes. Liza Dernehl came on in the fourth quarter to notch three saves.
Indiana jumped out of the gates quickly, as Lappan fired a shot into the cage from the outside after an assist from Campbell 59 seconds into the action.
Wyckoff picked up her first goal of the contest 24 seconds later, hitting from two-meters after a nifty dish from Köhli on a counter-attack to make it 2-0.
Midway through the opening quarter, Concordia got on the board after getting a two-on-one breakaway which they converted.
Fournier and Campbell tacked on goals late in the quarter to give the Hoosiers a 4-1 lead heading into the second period. Fournier finished the game with three assists and a team-high four steals. Campbell also registered a pair of assists and a steal, to go along with her score.
After a Concordia goal to open the second stanza, the Hoosiers answered with a four-goal run to stretch their lead to six. The run featured Wyckoff's second goal, two from Fournier, and a close-range strike from Redder.
The Eagles notched their third goal of the game with 1:07 left in the half, scoring on a lob from outside five-meters cut the lead to 8-3.
Köhli answered 21 seconds later with a goal from deep after a Fournier assist to make it 9-3 at the break.
Wyckoff started the second half with a six-on-four goal, followed by a lob score near two-meters. Each tally came after an assist from Lappan, who finished the game with a career-high three helpers.
The Hoosiers gave up another long-range lob from Concordia during the third, but Wyckoff's score and a strike from Katie Black made it a 12-4 Indiana advantage going into the fourth.
Dernehl entered the game to start the fourth quarter, notching three saves and a steal in eight minutes.
Concordia tacked on a pair of fourth period goals to make it 12-6, before the Hoosiers capped the contest with a five-meter penalty shot conversion by Jacobs.
Game Two Recap (No. 13 Indiana vs. No. 20 Iona)
The No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team used seven unanswered goals during the second and third periods to cruise past No. 20 Iona, 14-6, on Friday in Redlands, Calif.
"We were very solid after the first quarter, offensively and defensively," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did a great job of controlling the game once we made our run."
Nicole Redder and Amanda Redfern led the way on the offensive end, tallying three goals apiece. Redfern's trio of scores was a career-high for the freshman, who also had two assists. Kelsey Campbell and Shae Fournier had two goals each, while Katie Black, Kate Dunn, Jakie Köhli, and Lauren Wyckoff notched one.
Cassie Wyckoff put together a stellar game in the cage, racking up a season-high 16 saves and allowing three goals in 28 minutes of action. Liza Dernehl made one save in the fourth quarter during four minutes of play.
The Hoosiers opened the game with a three-goal run, with two from Fournier and one from Campbell to gain control early.
Iona responded with a five-meter penalty conversion and a power play goal to cut the deficit to one heading into the second period.
The Hoosiers stifled Iona during the second and third quarters, shutting out the Gaels with pressure defense and stretching saves from Wyckoff.
Indiana converted on three of four second quarter power plays to establish momentum that would carry on for the remainder of the contest. Campbell, Redfern, and Dunn registered the trio of goals that gave the Hoosiers a 6-2 halftime edge.
Köhli continued the Hoosier streak into the third period, scoring with a left-handed shot from close-range after an assist from Meghan Lappan. Lappan finished the game with two assists and four steals.
Redfern added two third period scores, while Redder notched one. Hanna Eimstad and Lauren Wyckoff delivered the dishes on those scores. Wyckoff tallied three assists in the game, to go along with four earned exclusions.
Both teams put up four goals apiece in the final stanza, with one goal from Redder, two from Wyckoff, and one strike from Black.
Game Three Recap (No. 13 Indiana at Redlands)
Jakie Köhli led the Indiana Hoosiers to a 13-10 win against Redlands in the Friday nightcap after scoring four goals and grabbing two steals, as the Hoosiers won their eighth straight contest.
Along with Köhli's four goals, Nicole Redder, Amanda Redfern, and Lauren Wyckoff each recorded a pair of markers. The trio of Kara Butler, Kelsey Campbell, and Meghan Lappan had one apiece.
Cassie Wyckoff started the contest, playing one quarter and making four saves and grabbing one steal. Wyckoff allowed just one Redlands goal and also dished out an assist. Liza Dernehl came on to start the second period and finished the game with five stops.
The Hoosiers erupted out of the gates in the contest, leading 5-1 after the first period. The Hoosiers then got into a back and forth affair for the remainder of the game, with each team alternating scores up until the fourth quarter.
Redlands came up with two goals in the final 1:07 of the contest to pull within three at game's end.
Indiana had four players rack up two assists each, as Butler, Lappan, Redfern, and Lauren Wyckoff all tallied a pair. Wyckoff also collected a team-high four steals and a kick-out earned in the win. Lappan has had multiple assists in four of the last five games for Indiana.
The Hoosiers will be back in action next weekend as they host No. 7 Michigan in a game that will be televised live on the Big Ten Network at 2 p.m. ET.
