BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana assistant coach Abbie Norton (Stechschulte) recently competed at the USA Track and Field Indoor Combined Events Championships, which Indiana University hosted at Gladstein Fieldhouse. Norton took second place in the national championship pentathlon. Norton, who still trains under IU associate head coach Jeff Huntoon, recorded five personal bests in the competition, including her final score of 4,337 points.
Norton was excited to perform well at a big meet and is looking forward to taking her improvements into the outdoor season.
"It just feels so great to continue to improve each time I compete," said Norton. "It was great to get caught up in the excitement of USAs, it's such a fun event. I had bests in every event but the long jump. I'm looking forward to see how these improvements translate into outdoor."
Norton had lifetime bests in every event except the long jump. He score 4,337 points, to finish just 102 away from Bettie Wade's winning total. Norton started the meet with the second-fastest 60m hurdles time of all competitors (8.44). She followed that up by clearing 1.70m (5-7) in the high jump, posting a meet-best heave of 13.64m (44-9) in the shot put and then running an impressive 2:15.21 in the 800m to close out the competition.
The Hoosiers open the outdoor season at the Stanford Invitational and the Big Ten vs. SEC Challenge on the weekend of March 25-26. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
