Wyckoff, Fournier Earn CWPA Honors

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior Lauren Wyckoff and freshman Shae Fournier grabbed a pair of CWPA Western Division weekly awards after helping the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team to an undefeated performance at the Lancer Invitational, the conference office announced on Tuesday. Wyckoff earned the Player of the Week honor, while Fournier was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Wyckoff finished the five-game slate with 11 goals, eight assists, five steals, and eight earned exclusions to notch her second Player of the Week award of the 2011 season. She began the tournament with two goals, an assist, and two earned kickouts in an 11-6 win at Cal Baptist on Thursday. Wyckoff followed that up in the afternoon with two scores and two helpers in a 12-6 win against Siena.
The Los Altos, Calif. native posted a season-high four goals in a 13-6 victory over Concordia (Calif.), to go along with an earned exclusion. She dished out a trio of assists, earned four kickouts, and scored one goal in a convincing 14-6 win against No. 20 Iona.
Wyckoff rounded out the trip with two goals, two assists, and four steals in a 13-10 win at Redlands to extend the Indiana winning streak to eight.
Wyckoff has 10 multi-goal games this season, including five during the last seven games. She has season totals of 31 goals, 20 assists, 26 steals, and a team-high 45 earned exclusions.
Earlier this season, she became the fifth Hoosier in program history to eclipse 100 goals, 100 assists, and 100 steals in a career. The Los Altos, Calif. grabbed her 100th steal in the 9-8 win against Princeton on March 5. For her career, she has 142 goals, 117 assists, and 111 steals. The last Hoosier to crack the century mark in all three categories was Brooke Zimmerman in 2008.
Fournier made history with her Defensive Player of the Week award, as she became the first player in league history to win all three awards (Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week, Rookie of the Week) in a season since the Defensive Player of the Week award was created prior to the 2010 season. The award marks her seventh this season, setting a new league record for most by a player in a single campaign.
Fournier was a consistent force on the defensive end for the Hoosiers during their five wins, finishing with totals of 12 steals and six field blocks, while also recording eight goals, six assists, and five earned kickouts.
Fournier recorded five steals and a field block against Cal Baptist. She also had two goals and one earned kickout in the contest. She posted two steals and a field block versus Siena. Fournier had one goal, two assists, and two earned kickouts against the Saints.
Fournier continued to cause problems for opposing offenses the following day, grabbing four steals in a win against Concordia, while also registering three goals, three assists, and an earned exclusion.
Fournier had a field block in the victory over No. 20 Iona. She also had two goals and an earned kickout versus the Gaels.
She racked up a trio of field blocks and one steal to finish the trip against Redlands. She also dished out one assist in that contest.
Fournier has 14 multi-steal performances in her freshman campaign, including nine contests with three or more takeaways. For the season, she has team-highs of 26 assists, 49 steals, and 22 field blocks, while also recording 31 goals and 12 earned kickouts.
Freshman Meghan Lappan was also named to the Rookie of the Week Honor Roll for her solid play at the Lancer Invitational. Lappan had three goals, a team-high 10 assists, seven steals, and four earned exclusions.
