Hoosiers Wrap Day 1 of NCAA Swim and Dive Competition

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Led by an All-America performance from sophomore Ryan Hinshaw in the 500 freestyle, the Indiana men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up day one of competition at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Indiana is tied for 28th with one point with some of its best events to come on Friday and Saturday. Texas leads a bunched-up top three with 139 points, followed by Stanford in second (136), California in third (134).
Hinshaw led the Hoosiers in the 500 freestyle, placing 16th in a time of 4:22.85 to earn All-America honors. In the morning prelims he finished fifth in his heat and 14th overall with a time of 4:19.25. In other prelim swims, sophomore Jim Barbiere finished fourth in his heat with a time of 4:21.37 (24th overall). Seniors Titus Knight and Illya Larin swam the same prelim heat with Knight fifth (4:21.91 – 29th overall) and Larin sixth (4:22.78 – 33rd overall).
Senior Cody Weik was the Hoosiers’ lone swimmer in the 200 individual medley, finishing 51st overall with a time of 1:48.64.
The team of Eric Ress, Cody Miller, James Wells and Ante Zoricic finished 17th in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:11.42. Ress led them off with a time of 45.87 on his opening 100 backstroke leg, the second-fastest backstroke leg of the morning and just 2/100ths of a second off the fastest time posted.
In the 1-meter diving prelims, senior David Piercy finished 20th with a score of 314.50, while freshman Darian Schmidt made his NCAA debut with a 21st-place showing (313.60).
The competition continues Friday with the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving.
