LAREDO, Texas - The junior tandem of David Erdy and Chase Wright each finished day one of the 2011 Border Olympics at 3-under par to lead the Indiana Hoosiers men's golf team (No. 28 Golfweek-Sagarin/No. 34 Golfstat) to fifth place at Laredo Country Club, as the Hoosiers posted a 6-under 570 (286-284) after two rounds.
Arkansas and Oklahoma lead the 19-team field, as each squad fired a 23-under 553. Baylor (562) and Liberty (567) are in third and fourth, with the Hoosiers three strokes back. Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas is leading the way individually after putting up an 11-under 133 (69-64).
Erdy opened the tournament with six birdies en route to a first round 70. The Boonville, Ind. native followed up with five birdies in round two and a 1-under 71 to put him in a tie for 17th.
Wright put together his lowest 36-hole start of the 2011 season, joining Erdy in a tie for 17th with scores of 74 and 67. Wright's 5-under 67 in the second round, also a season-best for the junior, included seven birdies and only two bogeys.
Corey Ziedonis was the third Hoosier in the top-20, ending day one in a tie for 20th after posting a 2-under 142 (68-74). Ziedonis mounted an impressive charge during the late stages of his opening round, birdying five of his last six holes to post his first sub-70 score of 2011.
Brant Peaper and David Mills rounded out the Indiana lineup, with each posting 5-over 149 to tie for 62nd. Peaper opened with a 77 and rebounded in the afternoon for an even-par 72 that included an eagle on the par-5 ninth.
Mills posted scores of 74 and 75 on Friday. The freshman from Evansville, Ind. has registered scores of 75 or less in 21 of 23 total rounds this season.
