ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Hoosier women's tennis team fell on Saturday afternoon to No. 5 Michigan, 6-1. Indiana's point was earned with Evgeniya Vertesheva picking up a singles win.
Vertesheva defeated No. 63 Sam Critser of Michigan playing in the No. 2 singles match. It marked Vertesheva's first win over a ranked opponent on the season as she dominated in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.
"Michigan is very good with ranking No. 5 in the nation," Head Coach Lin Loring said. "We stayed with them early in the doubles and were up at 1 and 2. We also competed well at several positions in singles"
In doubles, Vertesheva teamed with Kayla Fujimoto in the No. 2 match and picked up six games before falling just short to No. 55 Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, 8-6.
Fujimoto also stretched her No. 4 singles match to a third set, but U-M's Taney was able to pick up the victory, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Indiana will look to rebound on Sunday at Michigan State. The Hoosiers and Spartans will clash at 11 a.m. ET.
