IU Women's Golf Sixth at Big Ten Championships

GLENCOE, Ill. - With 54 holes of the 2011 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships in the books, the Indiana women sit in sixth place with a score of 917 (305-302-310).
Championship play concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes at the Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. beginning at 8 a.m. CT.
Michigan State has a two-stroke lead on defending champion Purdue at 891. Purdue's score of 893 is followed by Ohio State (900), Northwestern (901) and Wisconsin (904).
"I am fairly pleased with the way we played today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We got off to a rugged start and conditions were very challenging but the team hung in there really well and pushed through on the back nine.
"We have ourselves in a decent position heading into tomorrow. We have to post a good number but I am feeling good about the way the team is playing."
The Hoosiers opened the day by finishing round two, posting a 302. Sophomore Rosie Davies had the low round for the second 18, posting a 2-over 74. She posted 16 pars in the round. Freshman Lindsay Gahm finished with a 3-over 75, birding the par-5 seventh hole and posting 14 pars. Freshman Sophie Hayashi's 4-over 76 in round two was highlighted by a birdie on 16. Sophomore Kate Coons tallied a 7-over 79, also putting up a birdie on seven. Junior Kristtini Cain matched her first round score with a 5-over 77 in the second round, while senior Lauren Giesecke tallied a 7-over 79. Her second round included birdies on five, eight and 13.
Indiana turned around and began round three at 11:30 a.m. CT.
Gahm is currently the top Hoosier on the leaderboard in 22nd place after posting a 4-over 76 in round two to give her a 54-hole score of 229 (78-75-76). Gahm picked up a birdie on the par-4 14th hole in round three and tallied par on 13 other holes.
Hayashi is tied for 23rd after a 6-over 78 in round three, putting her at 230 for the tournament (76-76-78). Hayashi started round three slow with bogeys on four of the first five holes, but picked things up on the back nine with birdies on the par-4 third hole and the par-4 sixth hole.
Cain has been a steady force for the Hoosiers in the tournament posting a 77 for the third time in as many rounds, putting her tied for 26th (77-77-77/231). In round three she bounced back from a double bogey on 18 to finish the round 1-under over the final nine holes.
Coons is just a stroke back from Cain and is tied for 31st after a 79 in round three Saturday (74-79-79/232). Coons had a run of back luck with double bogeys on 14, 15 and 16, but bounced right back with a birdie on 17 to go +1 over the final 11 holes.
Davies is tied for 33rd with a score of 233 (79-74-80). The round started rough for the sophomore as she found herself 6-over par after three holes, but she settled to make par on four of the next five and went -1 over the final four holes.
Giesecke rounds out the Hoosier lineup with an 80 in round three for a score of 237, good for a tie for 44th (78-79-80). Giesecke picked up her sixth and seventh birdies of the tournament in round three, knocking strokes off on the par-4 sixth and par-5 seventh holes.
