BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior forward Katie Griswold was one of many IU student-athletes who performed at the Hoosiers' inaugural Spirit of Indiana Showcase on Monday, April 25. Check out Katie's poem from the event:
I have a poem for you tonight, but before I start
There's something you should all know about this part
Everything I have to say, is entirely true
Especially the FACT that we're better than Purdue
We're better because we wear IU on our chest
And also because we're Hoosiers, and that means were the best
And you know, it has nothing to do with whistles or bells
We're just legitimately better than everybody else
We're the one's who dominate in crimson and cream
Everyone else wishes they had 24 sports, 1 team
But clearly only the Indiana Hoosiers are in their prime
Volleyball made it to the sweet 16 for the very first time
Wrestling killed it this year, taking everybody down
Obviously Men's soccer brought home another Big Ten crown
Women's cross-country's so fast they broke the top 30
Along with our rowing team whose been ridin' dirty
They've been killing races because nobody else can last
Sorry about ya Big Ten, but we're just too fast
Kinda like men's cross country who exceeded all expectation
By finishing 7th in the entire nation
Women's soccer pretty much dominates the scene
Thanks to Leigh-Anne Cummings, who has the best flip throw-in I've ever seen
Then there's the softball team, whose pitcher is unreal
That and they hit walk-off grand slams like its no big deal
Coach Wilson's going to turn football into a winning machine
Think about it, the man's on more billboards than I've ever seen
Water polo started their season off with great anticipation
And to this day their still ranked 13th in the nation!
Which brings me to our swimming and diving teams, who put on a show
Our women won the Big Ten Championship for the 3rd year, in a row
Along with our men who made a statement pretty clear
When Eric Ress was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Year
Then of course there's our jacked baseball team
Thanks to the Knipp and Lambert combine routine
Now, I'd tell you about field hockey, but maybe let's start with a quiz
Considering most of you probably don't even know what it is
We're the ones who wear skirts and play with a stick and ball
Yeah we don't wear ice skates, and its not like lacrosse, at all
But anyways, back to my point: about how we're the best
I'm pretty sure men's basketball passes that test
They had fans camping outside to get a glimpse of the top 10
That's right our boys were alllll over ESPN
Tom Prichard made history with that put-back slam
And Will Sheehey did Iowa diiirty with that one-handed jam!
Naturally, our golf teams are always below par, I checked
We're so good, that were par-fect!
Which brings me to Men's Tennis who is so legit
If you ever seen them compete, these guys never quit
So whoever thought it was a good idea to underrate them was dumb
Because they've literally been upsetting everyone
Along with the women who are just better than all the rest
I wasn't kidding when I told you that Indiana's the best
We all know women's basketball doesn't mess around either
We're so good, now Jori Davis is playin' for the Indiana Fever
Which brings me to track & field, and I'll do my best to stay calm
But honestly guys, I read the stats, we're literally the bomb
We have all the All-Americans, and Athletes of the year
I'm pretty sure the record books say one thing: Indiana was here
And you know what, we're not going anywhere. We're here to stay
Once you get a taste of this you can't give it away
Because were part of something special wearing crimson and cream
We all made the sacrifice because were living the dream
And as the years fly by, way faster than you planned it
You realize the biggest mistake you can make it to take it for granted
Because there's something about being apart of a team
And the older you get, the more it starts to mean
I realized this year, while injured on the shelf
That we really are a part of something, greater than yourself
And the beauty of it all, lies in the challenge it presents
To put the team first, even if its at your expense
Being able to look beyond yourself, from a wider perspective
It's the hardest thing, but the ultimate objective
Because the team's that can do that, see beyond the game
And recognize, that this is just life in a frame
And that what we do here, is how we prepare
To handle the obstacles that we'll meet out there
So that when that day comes, to go off on our own
We can look back and see just how much we've grown
And feel good not only about what we accomplished here
But what we can take with us, besides cool gear
And so, as we celebrate tonight, those who are leaving
Think about the kind of people this world is receiving
And smile knowing we've all played a part
In giving each of them, the best possible start
And so as they move on, and create their own plan
They'll remember that this was the place, where it all began
