BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University men's soccer team announced its 2011 schedule today and the slate features eight home matches and a total of nine matches against teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
The Hoosiers will make their annual preseason visit to the National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Ind., facing Duke on Aug. 19 and Xavier on Aug. 21 in preparation for the regular season. The team begins play in earnest on Aug. 27 with a season-opening trip to in-state foe Notre Dame on Aug. 27. Indiana leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 26-6-2, including wins in three of the last four matchups.
Indiana returns home for the annual adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 2 and 4 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. IU will face historic rival Saint Louis on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a matchup with Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m. The Billikens and Hoosiers first met in 1975 with Indiana holding an 18-9-4 advantage in the series. Their last meeting came in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, a 2-0 win for Indiana. IU and Dayton are meeting for the first time since 1983, with Indiana a perfect 10-0 against the Flyers.
The squad will head off on a four-game road swing, beginning with the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament where it will face Bucknell (Sept. 9) and Denver (Sept. 11). That is followed by a trip to the east coast for matches against Big East squads St. John's (Sept. 16) and Rutgers (Sept. 18). This is the third time in the last four seasons that IU and St. John's have matched up, with the Red Storm defeating the Hoosiers by a 3-2 score in overtime to advance to the 2008 College Cup. They met again in the 2009 season opener, a 0-0 double overtime tie.
Indiana begins defense of its Big Ten title on Sept. 23 when it plays host to Penn State in the conference season opener. These teams met twice last year, both times in State College, with a 3-2 regular season win for IU and a 2-1 Big Ten Tournament victory for the Nittany Lions. The Hoosiers will then travel to Wisconsin on Oct. 2 to face the Badgers.
A trio of nonconference matches begins with a visit to Bloomington from Louisville on Oct. 5. The Cardinals were the 2010 NCAA runner-up but IU is 16-2 all-time against the program. After a visit to Omaha last year and a 3-2 Hoosier victory, Creighton makes the return trip to Bloomington on Oct. 9. Indiana will then travel to in-state foe Butler on Oct. 12.
The Hoosiers will get a preview of the site of the 2011 Big Ten Tournament when it travels to Ann Arbor on Oct. 15 for a date with Michigan. That is followed by a pair of home matches against Kentucky (Oct. 19) and Michigan State (Oct. 23).
The month of October ends on the road for IU, beginning with a visit to Evansville for a mid-week matchup on Oct. 26. That is followed by a Big Ten contest at Northwestern on Oct. 30.
The regular season concludes on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium with the Ohio State Buckeyes making a visit on Nov. 5.
Postseason play begins Nov. 10-13 with the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. The first round of the NCAA Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 17, leading up to the 2011 College Cup Dec. 9-11 in Hoover, Ala.
