IU Mourns the Loss of Dave Schnell

Former Indiana University quarterback Dave Schnell lost his battle with cancer Sunday. He was 44.
In August of 2007, Schnell was diagnosed with leukemia.
The 6-3, 218-pound Schnell starred for Elkhart Central High School, and after his senior year in 1985 was named the number one high school player in the country by Sports Illustrated.
He went on to a fine career with the Hoosiers where he was a key component in coach Bill Mallory's successful start with the Hoosiers.
Schnell called Mallory a "father figure" since his own father died the day he signed with IU.
Mallory and IU's former star running back, Anthony Thompson, represented Schnell last May at his induction into the Indiana Hall of Fame when he was too ill to attend.
Schnell was with the Hoosiers when they earned bids to the All-American Bowl (after the 1986 season, when he was a freshman), the Peach Bowl (after '87 season) and Liberty Bowl (after '88), and is still third on IU's all-time career passing yardage list (5,470).
He was the only IU quarterback to lead Indiana to victories over Ohio State and Michigan in the same season.
Schnell, a father of four, ran an insurance business in Elkhart. In his spare time, he coached junior high football.
