Hoosiers Down High Point, 3-1

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Indiana Volleyball opened the 2011 season with a win over High Point, taking three out of four sets. The Hoosiers took the first set 25-15 before the Panthers battled back to win the second. IU won a tight third set by a 25-19 score before closing out the match with an 18-6 run fueled by Kelci Marschall closed out the Panthers by a final of 25-12.
Marschall recorded 15 kills, hitting .270, to lead the Hoosier charge and added seven digs for good measure. Marschall provided a steady performance bouncing four balls off the hardwood in each of the first three sets and then killing three in the fourth frame. Ivie Obeime joined Marschall in double figures, as the junior killed 11. Whitney Granado dished out 31 assists in the match.
On defense, Caitlin Cox (17), Melanie Hicks (12) and Caitlin Hansen (10) all finished in doubles figures in digs. Samantha Thrower and freshman Morgan Leach led the way as IU recorded eight blocks, each recording four. Leach had four blocks, six kills, three service aces and two digs in her collegiate debut. Thrower added nine kills. Obeime had three blocks as well.
The Hoosiers took charge in the third set after the Panthers won in the second. The third set saw IU hit .343 as a team with 15 kills on 35 swings with only three errors. The fourth-set was all IU. After a close start had the Hoosier up by one at 7-6, IU scored 14 of the next 16 points and closed out the match on an 18-6 run.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday with two matches against Cleveland State at 10:30 a.m. ET and then Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. ET.
