Tough Competition Awaits IU in California

The Indiana University volleyball team (7-2) has its second road trip of the season on tap this weekend. The Hoosiers travel to San Diego for the University of San Diego Classic. IU will play three matches over two days in the Golden State.
The Hoosiers will take on an undefeated George Washington (9-0) team at 5 p.m. PT on Fri., Sept. 16. On Sat., Sept. 17, IU will battle UC Santa Barbara (5-4) at 10 a.m. PT and then the host San Diego Toreros (10-0) at 7 p.m. PT.
Live audio broadcasts on IUHoosiers.com will be available for all three matches this weekend, and every contest throughout the entire 2011 season. Cody Sharrett will call the play-by-play.
All three matches on the weekend will mark the first ever meetings with the IU opponents. George Washington is led by junior outside hitter Lauren Whyte, who averages 4.42 kills per set and has 115 kills on the year. UCSB has a pair of hitters with 100+ kills on the season. Senior rightside hitter Stacey Schmidt has 119 and averages 3.50 per set, and sophomore Leah Sully has 105 and averages 3.09 per set. San Diego is ranked No. 17 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll. The Toreros led the nation a year ago in kills per set and assists per set. This season, USD has wins over Duke, North Carolina and Arizona State and boasts three players with over 100 kills.
COX ROX THE RECORD BOOKS
Caitlin Cox was named to the all-tournament team at the Hokie Classic and earned MVP honors at the Hoosier Classic. The senior libero broke IU's all-time digs record in the Gonzaga match and earned Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Cox has 1,569 career digs and surpassed Juli Pierce for the all-time IU record. The senior from Springport, Ind., has broken the single-season school record in the stat category in each of the last two seasons. Cox currently leads all Big Ten players with 5.19 digs per set this season.
