SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Indiana Volleyball (8-2) knocked off previously undefeated George Washington (10-1) in a five-set thriller (14-25, 26-24, 25-15, 15-25, 15-13). IU looked to have lost control of the match, dropping the fourth set by ten points and then falling behind by four early in the fifth. IU battled back to take the lead at 12-11 and never let it go. IU was led by Kelci Marschall's 17 kills and got key play from freshman Morgan Leach as well.
Head Coach Sherry Dunbar liked how her team battled through adversity to take he win.
"I was really happy that we came back in that fifth set and just competed," said Dunbar. "When you get to that point in a match, it is just all about earning points. I thought Samantha (Thrower) and Ivie (Obeime) came back into the match and made a big difference. Our serving at the end really made a big difference."
Marschall led with 17 kills. Leach added 14 and Obeime had 12. Leach and Thrower each had four blocks as IU finished with eight. Caitlin Cox added 24 digs and Whitney Granado had 43 assists.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sept. 17, playing UC Santa Barbara and San Diego on the final day of the USD Invitational. Cody Sharrett will have the live play-by-play on IUHoosiers.com. For complete coverage of all things IU volleyball, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
