BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After helping lead the ninth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers men's soccer team to back-to-back shutouts on the road to remain undefeated, senior defender Tommy Meyer is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Meyer, who has started 64 of 66 career games for Indiana on defense, helped lead the Hoosiers to a 0-0 double overtime tie at No. 14 St. John's on Friday. On Sunday, the Hoosiers posted a 2-0 victory at Rutgers, giving Indiana shutouts in back-to-back games for the first time since 2009. In addition to leading the Hoosiers at center back, Meyer also assisted on both goals in the victory. His first assist came as a long ball out of the back up to Blake Wise, who beat his defender for the game-winning goal in the 40th minute.
His second assist came as the ball bounced around the penalty area after a long Hoosier throw-in. Meyer cleared the ball back to A.J. Corrado, who shot through traffic for the second goal of the match. Indiana has posted four shutouts in seven matches this season, allowing just four goals on the year while scoring a Big Ten-leading 16.
The Hoosiers are now 5-0-2 on the season and open Big Ten play against Penn State on Friday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Armstrong Stadium.
Meyer is the fourth Hoosier to win Big Ten Player of the Week honors in four weeks of action. Goalkeeper Luis Soffner earned defensive honors on Aug. 29, while Eriq Zavaleta (Sept. 5) and Alec Purdie (Sept. 12) have been honored for their offensive efforts.
