BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With a two-goal, two-assist performance over the weekend at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, Indiana University freshman striker Eriq Zavaleta is the Big Ten co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
Zavaleta played a large role in Indiana's 3-1 win over Saint Louis and 6-0 win over Dayton to earn its first Classic title since 2005. Against the Billikens, Zavaleta scored his first career goal on what was the second shot attempt of his young IU career to give IU a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Zavaleta played the ball into senior Alec Purdie for what would become the game-winning goal.
On Sunday against Dayton Zavaleta picked up his second goal in as many games, weaving his way through a pair of Flyers defenders for a score in the 67th minute. In the 70th minute it was his back heel pass to sophomore Blake Wise that led to the sixth score of the afternoon for the Hoosiers.
For his efforts, Zavaleta was named to the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic All-Tournament Team and was honored as the Classic's Offensive MVP.
Zavaleta shares the award with Ohio State's Parnell Hegngi.
The Hoosiers (2-0-1) are back in action this weekend as they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame. The Hoosiers will face Bucknell on Friday, Sept. 9 at 5 p.m., and Denver on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 11:30 a.m.
