Indiana Splits Double-Header to Begin 2012 Dual Schedule

DURHAM, N.C. - The Indiana women's tennis team split its double-header on Sunday in Durham, N.C. Indiana fell to No. 3 Duke to start the day, but rebounded for a win over UNC Greensboro in the second dual of the afternoon.
The Hoosiers fell to the host Blue Devils, 6-1, to begin the day. Kayla Fujimoto picked up IU's lone point from the No. 6 singles position. Fujimoto topped No. 97 Annie Mulholland of Duke, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).
"I am pleased with our effort at Duke. We put ourselves in a position to win the doubles point and couldn't put it away," head coach Lin Loring said. "We were up 6-4 at No. 2 and 5-3 at No. 3 with points to go up 6-3. The singles scores were much closer than they appear. It's tough to open on the road with half of your roster being freshman against the No. 3 team in the country, but we played well."
In the second match of the day against UNC Greensboro, Indiana rebounded nicely picking up the 6-1 win. IU's Alecia Kauss and Leslie Hureau picked up a doubles win at No. 3. UNC Greensboro evened the doubles portion with a win at No. 1. In the No. 2 and deciding match, Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek edged Alex Whitehead and Dilara Yurtkuran, 9-7, to give IU the first point of the dual.
In singles, Hureau picked up a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-1, over Yurtkuran at No. 2. At the No. 3 position, Klyczek topped Whitehead in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-2. Kauss, Murdy and Garre also all picked up consecutive-set wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
"UNC Greensboro was a great match," Loring said. "We were very tired and had to fight the whole match. We could have easily lost it, but it was a great win on the road."
Indiana will return to the courts on Saturday, Jan. 28, for its first home dual matches of the season. The Hoosiers will host Western Michigan at 11 a.m. ET, and then will take on Butler at 4 p.m. ET at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington.
