BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's Andy Bayer is the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week, the conference has announced. Bayer leads the country in the 3,000 meters after his performance at the Gladstein Invitational. Bayer claims a weekly Big Ten award for the seventh time in his career and for the fourth time in Indoor Track and Field.
Indiana track and field director and head coach Ron Helmer said that Bayer was able to make the best out of an odd situation, and that is part of what makes him a special athlete.
"Andy went out and ran an outstanding early-season race this weekend," said Helmer. "He ran under eight minutes for the fourth time in his career. We are still training very hard, so it will be fun to watch as he gets more rest."
Bayer was the top collegiate in the Invitational 3,000 and finished second to Matt Elliott of Team Indiana Elite. Bayer's time of 7:58.85 tops the NCAA Division I list this season. After a slow early pace to start the race, Bayer hung on for his fourth career sub-eight-minute 3,000.
The Hoosiers return to action at the Indiana Relays on Jan. 27-28. For complete coverage of all things IU track and field, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
