SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (3-2) fell to No. 7 UC Irvine, 9-4, on Saturday night during the UCSB Winter Invite. The Anteaters were fueled by four consecutive first quarter goals to begin the contest.
The Hoosiers were led in scoring by sophomore Shae Fournier's two goals, along with one goal apiece from freshmen Alexis Jones and Colleen McNaught.
Senior Cassie Wyckoff registered 10 saves in the contest on 34 UCI shot attempts.
After the torrid start by the Anteaters, Fournier earned an ordinary foul and fired in a shot to put the Hoosiers on the board at 4-1, but UCI halted the momentum swing by converting with one second left in the period to go up by four.
The Anteaters tacked on the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 7-1 lead, until a drive from freshman Katie Contreras late in the second period resulted in a put-back goal from Jones to pull the Hoosiers within five at the half.
After a UCI lob increased the lead to six, Fournier came back for IU with a power play goal on a McNaught assist midway through the third.
The Hoosiers attempted to rally in the fourth after a nifty backhand from McNaught pulled IU within four at the 6:21 mark, but UCI held IU scoreless the rest of the way and added a backhand of their own to claim the 9-4 win.
Indiana is back in action on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. PT against No. 19 Cal State Northridge.
