HOME SWEET HOME
After playing its previous four games on the road, the Indiana field hockey team will return to Bloomington, Ind. to host No. 11 Iowa within the friendly confines of the IU Field Hockey Complex on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. The game will also be televised on the Big Ten Network.
The Hawkeyes invade the Hoosier state with a 10-3 record on the season and a 2-0 mark in B1G play. IU and Iowa will meet for the 17th time in program history, with Iowa holding a 12-4 advantage in the all-time series. The two programs last met at the 2011 Big Ten Tournament, where the then-ranked No. 11 Hawkeyes handed a season-ending 3-2 loss to Indiana in the first round; however, the Hoosiers have won the past two of three meetings.
A LOOK AT THE REDHAWKS
Indiana will head to Oxford, Ohio on Sunday, Oct. 7 for a non-conference tilt with Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. The RedHawks are currently 6-7 on the year with a 2-2 record in conference matches. Indiana has taken the previous two meetings with the RedHawks and lead the all-time series, 8-4.
Miami is also one-of-four Mid-American Conference opponents slated for the 2012 campaign, as the Hoosiers have already faced Ohio (Sept. 9) and Ball State (Sept. 30) and await play against Central Michigan on Oct. 13. In its 13 seasons, IU has faired well against MAC programs with a 35-16 record.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hoosiers suffered back-to-back road losses last weekend at the hands of both No. 22 Michigan State and Ball State. Against the Spartans, IU fell 3-0 in East Lansing, Mich. to fall to 0-2 in conference play. At Ball State, the Hoosiers remained tied at two goals apiece through the first 69 minutes of regulation, but the Cardinals struck with a last-minute goal with just 18 seconds left on the clock to secure the 3-2 win.
MANY THE MILES
The Indiana field hockey team racked up the mileage in its four-game road portion of the 2012 schedule. After traveling between Bloomington and Penn State, Lock Haven, Michigan State and Ball State, IU tallied nearly 1,800 miles of travel, which roughly matches the driving distance between Bloomington, Ind. and Tucson, Ariz.
CAREER FIRSTS
Several career firsts have been reached throughout the 2012 campaign. A handful of Hoosiers have scored their first career goals this season. Hannah Boyer (Sept. 9 vs. Ohio), Rachel Stauffer (Sept. 23 at Lock Haven) and Sydney Supica (Sept. 30 at Ball State) each netted career firsts. On the defensive end, Viki Green recorded her first career shutout against Vermont on August 26 to help the Hoosiers to a 3-0 road victory. Her complete game shutout was also the first since Becky Pany achieved the feat when IU blanked UC Davis, 1-0, on Oct. 9, 2010.
